?? ???? 2021 marked a pivotal year as Europe surpassed Asia to become the largest market for China's EV exports, a trend that continued strongly into 2023. Nearly half of China's exported electric vehicles found their way to European roads. The EU's robust political support for EVs, advanced charging infrastructure, and high consumer acceptance are key drivers behind this shift.
?? ???? Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Spain are at the forefront, emerging as top destinations for these exports. However, this surge in demand is presenting logistical challenges, with ports in Belgium and Spain grappling to manage the influx of Chinese EVs destined for other EU nations.
?? ???? European consumers' enthusiasm for Chinese electric vehicles goes beyond volume; they are also willing to pay premium prices. The average export price to Europe hovers around 30,000 US dollars, with Norway even reaching a higher benchmark of 39,000 US dollars. This is significantly above the global average export price, showcasing Europe's strong commitment to transitioning to electric mobility.
Let’s have a closer look into the EV market and at selected Chinese automotive brands that are involved in the production of electric vehicles (EVs):
???? BYD (Build Your Dreams):
BYD is one of China's largest and most internationally recognized electric vehicle manufacturers. Known for its wide range of EVs, including cars, buses, and trucks, BYD has seen significant growth in both domestic and international markets. As of 2022, BYD's EV production was substantial, with the company transitioning to exclusively produce electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
BYD has been expanding its global presence and exports its electric vehicles to numerous countries, including those in Europe. The company has made significant inroads in the European electric bus market and is also introducing its passenger EVs to European consumers and car rental companies like SIXT.
???? NIO:
NIO is a premium EV brand that has gained attention for its stylish designs and innovative battery-swapping technology. It's known for models like the ES8 and ES6 SUVs, and the EC6 coupe SUV. NIO's production numbers have been steadily increasing, and it's also expanding globally, with plans to enter European markets.
It has begun its international expansion, focusing initially on Norway, a country with one of the highest rates of EV adoption in Europe. The company plans to expand further into other European markets, capitalizing on the continent's growing interest in electric vehicles.
???? Xpeng Motors (Xiaopeng Motors):
Xpeng Motors focuses on smart, technology-driven EVs and is often compared to Tesla due to its focus on autonomous driving technology and software. Its popular models include the P7 sedan and G3 SUV. Xpeng has been ramping up production and deliveries, showcasing significant growth in the EV sector.
The company is also venturing into the European market. The company started exporting its electric vehicles to Norway, a common entry point for Chinese EV manufacturers into Europe, and is exploring opportunities to expand to other European countries.
???? Li Auto (Li Xiang):
Specializing in electric SUVs, Li Auto is known for its extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), which use a small gasoline engine to generate additional electric power. This approach helps address range anxiety issues. Li Auto's main model is the Li Xiang One, an SUV that has seen impressive sales in China.

The company had been primarily focused on the Chinese market and had not yet made significant moves to export its vehicles to Europe or other international markets.
???? SAIC Motor:
As one of China's oldest and largest automotive companies, SAIC Motor has ventured strongly into the EV market through its own brands and joint ventures with global companies like Volkswagen and General Motors. SAIC's EV lineup includes models under its Roewe and MG brands, with MG particularly gaining popularity in Europe and other international markets.
Through its MG brand, SAIC Motor has successfully entered various European markets. The MG brand has gained popularity in countries like the UK, Norway, and others, offering affordable electric vehicles and leveraging its historic British brand identity.
???? Geely:
Geely has made significant strides in the EV market, both under its own brand and through its ownership of Volvo. It has introduced several electric models, including the Geometry brand, and is investing heavily in electrification technology. Geely's production numbers for EVs are on the rise, reflecting its commitment to the EV sector.
It has a unique position due to its ownership of Volvo and has indirect influence in the European market through Volvo's electrification efforts. Geely's own-branded electric vehicles have not been significantly exported to Europe directly under the Geely brand. Instead, the company has been focusing on domestic sales and Asian markets.
As the EV market is rapidly evolving and the competition in China is high, all Chinese companies are continually adapting and increasing their production capabilities. Among the above listed Chinese automotive brands producing EVs, most of them are involved in exporting their vehicles, and some have indeed entered the European market.
The expansion of Chinese EV manufacturers into Europe is part of a broader trend as these companies seek to capitalize on Europe's rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
Amount the six mentioned Chinese automotive brands (BYD, NIO, Xpeng Motors, Li Auto, SAIC Motor, and Geely), some are indeed exploring the realm of electric flying objects like air taxis or VTOLs (Vertical Take-Off and Landing vehicles).
???? Geely has shown interest in the aerial mobility sector. The company acquired Terrafugia, a U.S.-based company working on flying cars, and invested in Volocopter, a German firm developing electric VTOL aircraft. Geely's involvement in these companies indicates its interest in expanding beyond traditional automotive manufacturing into the emerging field of urban air mobility.
???? Xpeng Motors (Xiaopeng Motors) has also ventured into the realm of flying vehicles. The company is developing electric flying cars through its affiliate, HT Aero. HT Aero is working on VTOLs that integrate automotive and aerospace technology, focusing on urban air mobility solutions. This move showcases Xpeng's ambition to be at the forefront of innovative transportation solutions.
???? As of now, other brands like BYD, NIO, Li Auto, and SAIC Motor have not publicly announced significant projects or investments in the electric flying vehicles sector. However, given the rapid development of the EV and urban air mobility industries, they explore such opportunities.

10 个月Would you know the size, in employees and revenue, of each of these brands? It takes a lot of people to design, engineer and reliably set to production, anything 'new', like an immersive in-cabin and human-in-th-loop augmented experience. But I suspect Mainland-China origin brands are getting 'there' must faster than EU brands.

12 个月Stephan, you look great with your Chinese EV, I was thinking about the off road EV to have an adventure trip over the mountains when I came across to this post. The delivery power and the battery discharge time when one is driving out of civil regions. By the way, the ESUV in the picture seems technically high with a charming outlook.
