RJC Connections: June 2024
Welcome to this edition of RJC Connections, where we celebrate climate pacts and grand openings! We also delve into steel solutions for complex projects, office-to-residential conversions, and reaching new heights in mass timber construction.
Proud Participants of the Responsible Buildings Pact Initiative
The Climate Smart Buildings Alliance (CSBA) has spearheaded the Responsible Buildings Pact Initiative, aimed at increasing the adoption of low-carbon materials in the built environment. RJC is one of the 23 developers, consultants, contractors and supporters who have joined the Pact, dedicated to propelling our industry towards sustainable practices.
Unveiling BMO Centre’s Half-Billion Dollar Expansion
RJC is proud to be part of the team that delivered the impressive expansion project at Calgary’s iconic BMO Centre. Officially opening its doors in early June, the facility now boasts the title of Western Canada's largest convention centre. The project’s many larger-than-life features include Canada’s biggest indoor fireplace, and service elevators capable of holding a pick-up truck.
Navigating Office-to-Residential Conversions: Key Considerations
Amidst rising office vacancies and housing shortages, office-to-residential conversions offer potential, but present challenges. Paul Fritze, Principal at RJC Engineers, highlights key considerations: zoning and permits, meeting residential standards, efficient building design, reusing existing infrastructure sustainably, and leveraging government incentives.
Collaborative Steel Solutions for a Sculpted Skyscraper
RJC’s Andrew Voth discusses the collaborative delivery process of the TD Terrace project – a new landmark skyscraper located in Toronto's financial district. The project combines a concrete core with approximately 9,500 tonnes of structural steel, allowing for faster construction and meeting the complex demands of its unique sculpted and sloped design.

Exploring New Heights in Mass Timber Construction
With a focus on improving the sustainability of our built environment, RJC’s Grant Newfield discusses the significance of the recent mass timber code changes, and next steps for the industry. The potential change of height allowance from 12 to 18 storeys in the National Building Code signals a broad shift towards more environmentally friendly building practices.
Mastering Traffic Deck Coatings: 5 Tips for Extended Performance
Ensure the longevity of your traffic deck coating (TDC) with expert advice from RJC’s Bryant Bortolotto-Freeman. Protecting concrete from moisture and contaminants is essential for structural integrity, especially in parkades. Bryant emphasizes five key practices for maximizing TDC effectiveness.
