RJC Connections: August 2024
Welcome to the August edition of RJC Connections, where we celebrate big achievements and dive into the future of steel construction! We also explore Indigenous collaboration in design, a layered roof replacement approach, and a behind the scenes view of UBC Gateway's construction.
RJC Leader Named One of CCE's Top 10 Under 40
We are proud to announce that Sameer Hasham, an Associate and Group Leader at our Victoria office, has been recognized as one of Canadian Consulting Engineer's Top 10 Under 40 in their July/August 2024 issue. Specializing in building science, Sameer has been instrumental in advancing our expertise in designing high-performance building enclosures, with a focus on both structural and thermal engineering. Congrats Sameer!
Indigenous Collaboration in Design: Building a Future Together
Indigenous collaboration in design is crucial for integrating cultural values and knowledge into modern practices. This approach fosters reconciliation, supports self-determination, and creates sustainable livelihoods for Indigenous communities. At RJC Engineers, we are proud to work alongside Indigenous communities to create projects that are culturally significant, sustainable, and impactful.
The Future of Steel Construction
In today’s construction landscape, reducing embodied carbon is increasingly critical. RJC’s Dominic Mattman and Andrew Voth discuss the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), such as 安赛乐米塔尔集团 ’s XCarb? EPDs, to meet sustainability goals. These EPDs highlight the reduced carbon footprint of steel products, ensuring steel remains a key material in eco-friendly building designs.

Prolonging the Life of your Roofing System
Roofing systems are vital to building protection but eventually need replacement. Stephen Epp, Project Engineer at RJC Engineers, suggests visualizing a roof as a multi-layered cake to understand its components, from the waterproofing membrane (icing) to the structural deck (plate). He emphasizes that in many cases, only the top layers need replacement, extending the life of the underlying components and saving costs.
Sneak Peek: UBC Gateway - A New Hub of Innovation and Sustainability
Take a peek behind the scenes of ongoing construction at the UBC Gateway project, a six-storey, mass-timber building that symbolizes a commitment to Indigenous relationships, highly sustainable design and community health. The project the innovative CREE panel system and aims to be the The University of British Columbia 's first Zero-Carbon Building.
