R&J Press – Implementing R&J Into the Game
As I wrap up each camp with coaches and review the system process, philosophy, and teaching points, I am reminded that I must make sure I “connect some dots” when we go from “the practice” into “the actual game.”
In camp/practice, we teach and train for relentless PRESSURE and ROTATION right into the front court and we NEVER take it off. We TRAP and ROTATE and PRESSURE and JUMP until we get that “bad shot or steal or turnover!”
The Run and Jump Press is a “risk/reward” defense. The closer you are to the basket, the MORE RISK! As you prepare your team for a game, and evaluate how they are developing, you MUST decide how much RISK you want to accept.
You could consider taking the R&J off and getting into your half court defense when the
· Ball Crosses Half Court
· Ball Comes Out of a Front Court Trap
· Ball Gets Inside the Three Point Line
Your half court defense will be whatever you are comfortable with. (M-M/2-3 Zone/1-3-1/ 3-2). However, it is good to note that the easier half court defense to rotate into is the M-M but all will work fine.
You will see a lot of attacks versus the Run and Jump Press and because you are teaching your players to ATTACK and ROTATE and RUN and PROTECT the rim, you can make simple adjustments from the bench.
Example would be a MIDDLE ATTACK where the offense waits for the “rim line” defender to trap the sideline. You simply would let that position to NOT trap sideline and allow the OB “on the ball defender” to be the TRAPPER!
HOPE THIS HELPS COACHES!
HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER WORKING WITH THE R&J!
