Risk of serious injury from motion compensated gangways

Risk of serious injury from motion compensated gangways

So the The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety recently issued a warning over the safety of gangways used to connect service vessels to offshore wind turbines.

The so called motion compensated gangways (MCG) have experienced a sharp uptick in the number of incidents related to the use of such recently.

A simple cheap, at least partly solution, to mitigate much of this risk is the use of accurate real-time wave measurements onboard the vessel itself.

This is exactly what the CSOV Rem Power is using in order to evaluate if the weather forecast is in line with the actual weather conditions when connecting the gangway and finding the optimal vessel heading in order to reduce vessel movement / motion.

There's really no excuse anymore not to equip newbuilds with this proven technology anymore and considering the fact that such a solution can be installed & commissioned whilst the vessel is doing its crew change / in transit the same can be said for already operational vessels.

Have a quick read of our case study on the CSOV Rem Power.

Get in touch and improve both your safety and operability immediately. Not many solutions out there where you are able to reduce risk and mitigate such whilst as the same time saving money by increasing your offshore operability. If that is not a win-win situation i don't know what is!:)

None of the accidents have been caused by rouge waves or the gangway being outside the allowed envelope. A wave radar wouldn't help in any of these situations.

Everyone needs to have a strong perception that there are people's lives that go across that Gangway.

There are other factors there to avoid some accidents and incidents; accurated weather forecast, client pressure to connect with marginal conditions, outstanding maintenance to be continuously performed on W2W equipment, training compliance for operators, only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed operating the W2W, perhaps that should be more often monitored by the client representative on board the SOV's....etc....
