The risk-free way to leave your job

The risk-free way to leave your job

Leaving my corporate job was one of the scariest moments of my career.?

I felt so stuck in my role. I knew I had more to contribute and that my passions and talents were not being fully utilized.?

As a mission-driven person, I dreaded going to work every day, knowing that I wasn’t truly having the impact that I wanted to have or receiving the respect I deserved.

Many of the people I talk to feel this way too.?

They have a deep desire for more in their careers, but when it comes to leaving their job, they get completely stuck.?

Why is it so hard to walk out the door??

The pressure to follow the prescribed path can be paralyzing. Work culture encourages us to stay in our lanes and avoid unnecessary risk.?

I used to fear that I’d come off as greedy or ungrateful for wanting more.?

I also felt guilty for not loving my job when so many others were struggling to make ends meet.

Not to mention, the thought of failure and financial ruin are typically top of mind for most professionals.?

All of these thoughts are enough to make anyone freeze up, keep their head down, and keep grinding away.

You hope that if you keep working hard, you will get the recognition you deserve and the opportunities that come with it.?

Even if you quietly start applying to other roles, you can’t give the search your full attention because your day job is so demanding.?

You end up watching others get promoted while you stay exactly where you are – working long hours feeling resentful, undervalued, and unfulfilled.?

You need a simple, low-risk way to break the cycle and start building momentum in your career.?

Your first step is to start having as many conversations as you can – one person at a time.?

Make a list of people you know, and start talking.?

Truly - don’t worry about saying the “right” or “wrong” thing. Just start talking and asking questions. See what you can learn about yourself, others, and the market.?

Keep the conversation open-ended.?

Tell the truth about how you’re feeling (just dont’ be negative).?

Share your best guess as to where you’d like to end up.?

Ask for advice.?

Tell others that you’re looking to make a significant change, even if you don’t know what that change is.?

It’s ok not to know. In fact, it allows others to more easily contribute without the pressure of feeling like they need to give you a job or have all the answers.?

Some of my clients say that they’re reluctant to reach out to others because they feel like they’re burdening people. But the opposite is true. When we reconnect, it brings us closer. And most people are grateful for it.?

It’s not about self-promoting or putting on a dog and pony show.?

It's about meeting people, asking questions, and learning about yourself and the market.?

You might still be nervous, and that’s ok.?

You might still approach the conversation with doubts or insecurities. That’s okay, too.?

The more conversations you have, the more you get to practice showing up for yourself.?

This is the best way to become a stronger communicator, and a person that others want to open doors for.?

Here’s what can happen for you when you take this bold step:

  • Tap into the hidden job market: You will become privy to job opportunities that are not posted for the public. In the corporate world, most roles are filled by referrals and relationships.
  • Uncover unexpected career paths: When you get curious about what others are up to and talk to them about your goals, you uncover new opportunities you wouldn’t have considered before – like switching into an adjacent industry or role.?
  • Faster advancement: There’s no better way to take charge of your career trajectory than to deepen your relationships. They will mention your name in rooms where you want to be.

Everything can change for you with one conversation.

It might not happen immediately, but it will happen.?

And there are also ways to accelerate the pace of your search.?
