Risk environment, lists, controls, double-checks

We all face a risky environment, and we all have our ways of handing it. For your organization, you probably have ongoing monitoring, with process metrics to show if your management system is working as you intended.

These metrics are frequently lagging, that is, they measure effects after the event. The issue with lagging indicators is that problems may occur, and you are left reacting to your risk.

To be more proactive you need to measure controls on the process to allow system deficiencies to be detected earlier. This is the purpose of audits. Audits need to be selective to use resources well, however. Not all process controls being audited are equal in their potential impact, so using a risk lens helps you focus your audit resources where the value is greater.
