RisingWave Newsletter January 2024

If 2023 was a success for RisingWave Labs, brace yourself, for 2024 is gearing up to outshine it! So, no wonder then that January kicked off with lightning speed, setting the stage for a spectacular year. We released RisingWave 1.6 and added a number of new plans and pricing features for RisingWave Cloud (more below). Also, we kicked off the second season of Streaming Stories and launched its spin-off series, Streaming Connect. While Deep Stream With Yingjun is to premiere tomorrow, the Stream Team program (more in the Community Corner below) is already in full swing. Not too late to sign up for both!

Saving the best for last: our newsletter has a sleek new design. Consider this a mere sneak peek into the many exciting changes the RisingWave community is about to undergo.

RisingWave Cloud

• Developer plan launched. We launched the developer plan to help individual contributors get started with RisingWave. Without worrying about a free-tier cluster expiring in seven days, the developer plan inherited the previous free-tier clusters, with a 7-day free trial followed by a surprising offer of $99 per month. A cluster in the developer plan is deployed compactly on a 2 RWU single node, enjoying great performance at an affordable price.

• New standard service launched. At the standard price, you can create a hosted cluster at any scale without any limitation during a valid period. RisingWave Cloud applies a pay-as-you-go model, so a cluster can be configured within a desired budget and terminated at any time. Please visit our website for a more detailed explanation of the pricing information and the difference between the developer and standard plans.

• Updated billing system. To better support both the developer plan and the standard plan, we have improved the user experience of our billing system. One can now easily check-out their current spendings during the billing period. The billing system will list all the detailed items, grouped by the clusters you are running

RisingWave Database

• Sinking into tables. You can sink data from sources and tables in RisingWave into another table in RisingWave using the CREATE SINK ... INTO ... command. The behavior of this streaming job is the same as creating an external sink and the sinked table can maintain snapshot consistency with the upstream table. The general syntax is outlined below

Being able to sink data into tables provides another method to merge data from different sources together into one table. It is more flexible to add or remove a data source to the table using the CREATE SINK ... INTO ... and DROP SINK... statements. The results of the table are still updated continuously as new data is streamed in. For instance, we can merge data from 3 different Kafka topics into the same target table. Here, we sink data from the Kafka sources orders_s0, orders_s1 and orders_s2 into the table orders.

• StarRocks sink. StarRocks, a high-performance analytical data warehouse, that enables real-time, multi-dimensional, and highly concurrent data analysis. To sink data from RisingWave to StarRocks, use the CREATE SINK command.
• Shared PostgreSQL source for multiple CDC tables. Last month, RisingWave introduced a more convenient method to create multiple CDC tables using the same MySQL source. This method now also works for PostgreSQL CDC sources, eliminating the need to create a separate database connection for each table
