The Rising Importance of SAT in 2024

There were a few years since 2020 when high school students were unable to take the SAT due to the restrictions of the pandemic. Consequently, many universities decided to make SAT scores optional for the application process. This meant that some universities were ‘test-optional’ and accepted students with or without SAT scores, while others were ‘test-blind’ and did not consider SAT scores even if students reported it. But in recent times, several top universities have reinstated SAT score requirements, making a move back towards a ‘test-required’ policy.
In 2024, if you are planning to apply for a bachelor’s in the USA in top universities, it is highly recommended to take the SAT and aim for high scores. Here are a few factors to consider for this decision:
Research findings from Opportunity Insights indicate that Grade 10 / Grade 12 marks (or high school GPA) do not give strong predictions of students doing well later in college. Instead, students with high SAT scores are likely to perform similarly in scale, if not better, in their college grades. This has influenced many universities to give more importance to SAT scores during the admission process.
There was a conceived notion that an SAT score could only be achieved by students from strong socio-economic backgrounds as they could access tutoring. However, the research findings show that there is no evidence that students from higher-resourced backgrounds outperform students from lower-resourced backgrounds. Their college GPAs are ultimately dependent on their academic capabilities which are partly built by preparing for skill-based standardised tests like the SAT. Reputed universities generally have admission policies that ensure diversity and inclusivity.

The Digital SAT has become more student-centric by upgrading from the traditional OMR sheets. The test even allows students to carry their own device which can run the digital testing app called Bluebook. Several test-takers of the new Digital SAT have testified about the test being better than the traditional pencil-paper test. In a recent New York Times article, American students and proctors had overall positive feedback despite the minor glitches during the test pilot. Overall, the test has become, shorter, faster, and noticeably more convenient.
So if you aspire to get admitted to a top USA university and also receive overseas scholarships, you must prepare for the SAT and set a target of scoring 1300 or more. Consider getting personalised guidance from expert trainers and utilise all the official SAT prep resources.
