Rising to the HR challenge

A quick word from our Business Development Manager Amy....

I enjoyed attending the HR Leadership Summit in Auckland earlier this month. The focus was supporting HR leaders to rise to the challenge of making decisions with a lasting impact around employee engagement, wellbeing, collaboration and learning, and the significance of the human connection.

Highlights of the talks included:

Culture Amp ’s Devshree Bhatt using the analogy of a rocket and challenging employers to add “fuel” and remove “friction” to enable employees to soar.?

Strategic Pay Limited 's Cathy Hendry advocating for keeping pay policy broadly similar but using your pay budget strategically to retain top talent.

Talogy sharing their research on attracting and retaining talent - motivating and engaging employees were the top 2 challenges faced by leaders.

Prof Jarrod Haar, PhD, FRSNZ, CFHRNZ giving a very entertaining meta-analysis of reasons for employee turnover. Key takeaways from this:

  • The cost of replacing an employee is 200% of their salary, raising to 300% for a top performer.
  • Unsurprisingly, good job satisfaction and work-life balance are key to preventing turnover, whereas job insecurity and perceived employability elsewhere are top drivers of turnover.

During the event, we also learnt that 45% of HR Leaders plan to increase their staffing and recruitment budget soon, which is great to hear.

It was fab to connect with a number of our employers, including ATT Apprenticeship Training Trust and Blind Low Vision NZ and some potential new ones!

Salaries and flexible work are the biggest job-seeking challenges

A couple of months ago, we asked our jobseeker community to answer some questions for us so that we could get to know a bit more about them and their job-seeking journey. Here are some key points.

  • The top challenges were finding a job they liked, finding a job that met salary requirements and finding flexible work. Sixteen per cent of respondents left their last job because they didn’t like the culture, and 9% left because the job didn’t align with their values. And a whopping 63% said it was very important to know the salary range before applying for a job. That's backed up by our latest LinkedIn poll about job-seeking challenges where matching salary expectations and finding flexible work were the biggest issues.
  • The top benefits listed when considering a job were flexible or remote-friendly working, extra annual leave and flexible sick leave, and the opportunity for development. More than half would prefer hybrid work, and another 25% preferred to work mainly from home.
  • Our respondents were mainly female (82%). Around 5% identify as Māori. The largest groups were at the intermediate (no direct reports) and first-level management stages of their careers. Many also had volunteer experience including support roles and board governance.
