Rising Above the Storm: HTM Excellence During Adversity

Rising Above the Storm: HTM Excellence During Adversity

A view of the baseball field behind the hospital, captured during a rare snowfall with a wind chill of 14°. Both incredibly uncommon sights in New Orleans.

As New Orleans braces for a historic winter storm, with forecasts predicting up to 7 inches of snow and sleet—a rarity in our region—our city faces challenges reminiscent of past challenges. In response, our biomed team has committed to a lockdown, transforming our workshop into a temporary home. Sharing a single shower and sleeping quarters among equipment, we're united by a common goal: ensuring the hospital's critical systems remain operational during this unprecedented event.

Embracing the Champion's Mindset

Last night, as I watched the NCAA Championship game, I witnessed Ohio State's remarkable 34-23 victory over Notre Dame.?

The commentators constantly mentioned the challenges Ohio State had to overcome to win this championship. Being I was not in my bed last night, my sleeping pattern is not the same.?So this morning I was reflecting on my current situation and can draw parallels to Ohio State's journey. Just as the Buckeyes faced adversity and overcame obstacles, we too must adopt a champion's mindset to navigate the challenges posed by the impending storm.

?This involves:

  • Resilience:?Staying steadfast in our duties, even when conditions are less than ideal.
  • Teamwork:?Collaborating effectively, much like Ohio State's offense and defense worked in harmony to secure their victory.
  • Focus:?Maintaining concentration on our objectives, ensuring that patient care remains uninterrupted.

By embracing these principles, we can rise above the storm and continue to provide exceptional service, much like the champions I witnessed on the field last night.

Commitment to Excellence

Our current situation demands more than routine effort, it requires a constant commitment to excellence. Sharing limited resources and working extended hours can test our endurance, but it's during these moments that our dedication truly shines.

Turning Adversity into Opportunity

While the storm have me and my team on lockdown, it also offers an opportunity to strengthen our team dynamics and showcase our resilience. By maintaining a positive attitude and supporting one another, we can transform this challenging period into a testament to our collective strength.? We can take this time to become closer as a team.? I know me and the MME manager Lanae Clevenger, spent a lot of time together on yesterday, checking in the staff who will be staying overnight.? That definitely benefitted our relationship as Colleagues with Trimedx.

Conclusion

The rare winter storm impacting New Orleans serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of our work environment. However, by embracing a champion's mindset and turning adversity into opportunity, we can navigate these challenges successfully. Our shared experiences during this lockdown will not only ensure the safety and well-being of our patients but also reinforce the strength and resilience of our biomed team.

Eventhough it’s the early part of the winter storm, the HTM industry has demonstrated its greatness not just in technical expertise but in its constant support. I had colleagues and friends from across the field checking in to ensure I was okay. Leaders like?AAMI's Danielle McGeary?and my buddy?Ryan Sanders from WellStar reached out, offering encouragement and reminding me of the strength of our professional community.

In these moments, it became clear that the HTM field isn’t just a profession—it’s a family. While the storm continues to drop snow outside, inside, we’re reminded of the power of connection, resilience, and shared purpose.

Stay safe, stay focused and more importantly, stay warm and let's continue to rise above the storm together.

This is something my eyes never witnessed before.
