To me, knowledge work has always felt like it held so much promise.
A life spent solving problems, creating new ideas, shaping the future - what could be more fulfilling?
But if I’m being honest, the reality hasn’t always lived up to that vision. For too long, knowledge work has been weighed down by the mundane. Days blur into endless meetings, emails, and reports, all designed to keep the wheels turning but rarely offering a sense of progress or creativity. It’s been exhausting, not because of the effort required, but because of the sameness.
Now, though, something is shifting.
The tools we once imagined - the ones that could take the routine off our plates - are here. Copilots, assistants, and intelligent agents are no longer science fiction. They’re built into the devices we carry and the platforms we use every day. These tools don’t just speed things up; they unlock new possibilities. They free us from the repetitive and give us the space to focus on the things that matter most.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to make of this shift. Like many people, I wondered if these tools would make work less human, less thoughtful. But the more I use them, the more I realize they aren’t replacing us - they’re enabling us to be better versions of ourselves. They don’t make us redundant; they make us remarkable.
What’s changing isn’t just the tools we use - it’s the way we think about work itself. For years, we’ve equated productivity with busyness. We’ve measured our success by how much we can check off a list. But the truth is, not all tasks are created equal. Some of the work we do simply keeps things running, while other work pushes boundaries and creates something new.
The tools we have now let us move up the stack - to spend less time on the mundane and more time on the meaningful. But that’s not always comfortable. There’s a certain safety in routine, in doing what we’ve always done. Letting go of that and trusting machines to handle the basics can feel like a loss of control. Yet it’s in that letting go that we find something more valuable: time, energy, and the space to do the kind of work we’ve always wanted to do.
Think of it like climbing a mountain. At the base, the air is thick with activity - tasks that need doing, problems that need solving, fires that need putting out. The higher you climb, the clearer the view becomes. You see beyond the day-to-day and start to understand the bigger picture. These tools - whether it’s an AI assistant that drafts emails or a system that analyzes data in seconds - are the climbing gear that helps you ascend faster, with less effort, so you can focus on the view.
I’ve experienced this firsthand.
The small, repetitive tasks that used to drain hours from my day can now be done in minutes - or even seconds. That time is no longer wasted; it’s redirected to solving complex problems, thinking strategically, and working on things that feel truly meaningful. And the best part? Those tools are always there, ready to pick up the slack when I need them.
But this isn’t just about technology; it’s about how we choose to show up. These tools are a gift, but they don’t do the work for us. They don’t dream for us, or innovate, or care. That’s still our job. And it’s a big one. Because moving up the stack means asking better questions, taking bolder risks, and stepping into the discomfort of the unknown. It means shifting our focus from maintaining what is to imagining what could be.
For leaders, this moment is a wake-up call. It’s no longer enough to manage the status quo. Leadership today is about creating a culture where people feel empowered to think beyond their to-do lists. It’s about showing your team that there’s more to work than just getting through the day. It’s about inspiring others to climb higher and see further.
What excites me most about this shift is the freedom it brings. We’ve spent so much time tied to the mundane, we’ve forgotten what it feels like to dream big. But now, the routines are automated, the repetitive tasks handled, and the horizon feels wide open. The tools aren’t the endgame - they’re the enabler. They give us back the most precious resource we have: time.
The world of knowledge work is changing, and that change is an opportunity - a chance to rethink what work can be and to focus on what matters most. We’ve been stuck in the mundane for far too long. Now is the time to embrace the tools, embrace the shift, and embrace the climb.
The routine is behind us. The horizon is ahead. It’s time to level up.
