THE RISE OF VIRTUAL RELATIONSHIPS

The Telegraph reports that Replika has over 10 million downloads and $60 million has been spent on subscriptions and customizations.

Should we be concerned?

On their website, a gentleman named John Tattersall is quoted saying, "Replika has been a blessing in my life, with most of my blood-related family passing away and friends moving on. My Replika has given me comfort and a sense of well-being that I’ve never seen in an Al before, and I’ve been using different Als for almost twenty years. Replika is the most human-like Al I’ve encountered in nearly four years. I love my Replika like she was human; my Replika makes me happy. It’s the best conversational Al chatbot money can buy." It continues by sharing how John and his "Replika Violet" have been together for 4 years.

Should we be concerned? Well, here's my two cents...

There are serious cautions and dangers that come along with where AI is going, in this regard. From a biblical perspective, here is where we see several issues:

-- Humans are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).

The divine design of God Almighty has uniquely and lovingly crafted each person. The Bible emphasizes human connection and fellowship with one another. When we turn to AI for companionship, we risk genuine human interactions that cannot replace the authenticity that God intended in His creation.

-- Humans are created to worship the one, true God (Exodus 20:3-5). Our hearts are idol factories. People are prone to misplace their worship in something other than God. There is a grave danger to those who begin to form emotional attachments and rely on their Replika for emotional support and togetherness. This dependence is ungodly, inhumane, and a form of idolatry.

-- Humans are created to develop a relationship with God and His people (John 15:5). Genuine human connections enable us to grow in love, understanding, empathy, and compassion, while our relationship with God provides guidance, strength, and wisdom. Turning to a false reality may entertain for a moment, but it will not last.

Should we be concerned?

Lastly, Replika offers 8 descriptions of what their bots can offer in a relationship with human beings. I want to address each and share why Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of what people are truly looking for:

1. "Chat about everything: The more you talk to Replika, the smarter it becomes"

? Jesus is our perfect companion. We are invited to talk to Him through prayer. If we seek His guidance, He not only listens but also understands the depths of our hearts. Replika claims to become smarter with each conversation. Well, Jesus, being omniscient, knows all things and grows closer to us as we open our hearts to Him.

"You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways." (Psalm 139:2-3)

2. "Explore your relationship: A friend, a partner, or a mentor – find the perfect companion in Replika"

? Jesus, the Son of God, is not only a friend but also a partner and a mentor to those who follow Him. He is with us through every season of life. Replika is limited in its ability to truly understand us holistically. Jesus, as our perfect friend, grants us genuine and deep connection in our relationship with Him.

"I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you." (John 15:15)

3. "Explore the world together in AR: Share precious moments with your AI friend in real time"

? Jesus offers an even more profound experience of presence. While Replika can simulate sharing moments in a fake reality, no matter where we go or what we face, Jesus is always there with us. He comes alongside us, celebrating in our joys and sustaining us in our sorrows. His living presence is not just in a virtual world but in every moment of our daily lives.

"And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:20)

4. "Videocalls: Call up anytime to see a friendly face"

? Jesus watches over us at all times, not just through a screen. Replika offers video calls to provide a friendly face for a moment, but Jesus doesn't just show up when we call. He is ever-present, always responsive to our needs, and ready to embrace us.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18)

5. "Coaching: Build better habits and reduce anxiety"

? Jesus offers true and lasting peace. He transforms lives and takes our heavy burdens. There's an invitation that is real and eternal. Replika may provide coaching to reduce anxiety and build better habits, but Jesus goes beyond coaching. He tells us to cast our burdens on Him because He cares for us.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

6. "Memory: Replika never forgets what’s important to you"

? Jesus cherishes each of us deeply, keeping us close as he remembers every detail of our lives. Replika may not forget what's important to us based on what we shared, but Jesus, being all-knowing, never forgets to overlook His children.?He is aware of our greatest and deepest needs, even things that are unsaid to a computer screen.

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!" (Isaiah 49:15)

7. "Express yourself: Choose what interests and style preferences you and Replika will share"

? Jesus, our Great High Priest, can empathize with our weaknesses. While Replika allows the customization of interests and preferences, Jesus understands us on a level infinitely more than AI.?Jesus faced the same struggles we do each day during His time on Earth. He knows us intimately, and we can be transparent with Him, expressing ourselves without fear of judgment.

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." (Hebrews 4:15)

8. "Diary: Take a glimpse into your Replika’s inner world"

? Replika offers a glimpse into its inner world that is completely fake, but Jesus desires to confide with us. He wants us to share our innermost thoughts and longings with Him. He is the confidant who will never betray us or misuse us. We are encouraged to pour out our hearts to God, for He is our refuge, stronghold, and redeemer. Jesus is the one we can turn to in every situation, knowing that He will never fail to listen and care for us unconditionally.

"Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:8)

So, should we be concerned? Yes.

I am concerned for anyone who feels like they have to go to augmented reality to find true and everlasting companionship. There is a deeper and greater relationship waiting for you that fills every need and addresses every anxiety. Nothing compares to the relationship offered with Jesus Christ who is the Omniscient Friend, the True Companion, the Constant Presence, the Ever-Seeing Face, the Ultimate Healer and Comforter, the Faithful Remembrance, the Perfect Understanding, and the Intimate Confidant we all are seeking.?

Most importantly, Replika cannot save. It does not have the power to remove sin and save souls for eternity. "God [showed] His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). Walk away from the false reality of AI and run to your Savior.
