The rise of a true leader.
'Your title makes you a manager, your people make you a leader'- Bill Cambell
Bad managers are bad listeners. They listen to reply and to tell you what is best for you. Bad managers make their employees feel they are not listening to what is really going on...... Bad managers seem only interested in their own story and not in yours.
Bad managers have unrealistic demands. They talk to you like you are a manager too. Using fancy words that do not relate to what you are doing on a daily basis. They want you to become like them. They send you to communication trainings so you can learn to understand what they are saying to you. One size fits all but it is never your size.
Bad managers give up on people who can not keep up pace. They make them believe that they can be replaced immediately. Instead of helping people they threaten people. Layoff instead of payoff!
Bad managers breed true leaders
If things are bad people look for good. If management fails and lacks reality people start looking for those who can help them. They start looking for true leaders. True leaders who live close by. At home, at work or at the corner of a street.
True leaders who:
- Listen to understand, not to reply.
- Want to change things, not people.
- Want you to become who you really are, not someone else.
- Know that we are born to be real, not perfect.
- Care about people, not give up on them.
- Show up, not show off
Managers love to speak; leaders love to listen.
Managers who speak in a language of their own will never be heard by the people they lead. They just order them to follow. True leaders listen. They know that their workforce are grown up people. People who have a house of their own, people who raise children, people who take care of their parents. People with questions and doubts.
When I look around me I feel that there is a quiet revolution going on. Employees want their leaders to come from real life. Leaders who speak their language. Leaders who make them:
- Feel heard.
- Feel recognized.
- Feel valued
- Feel trusted.
- Feel safe.
Real people want real leaders!
