The Rise of Solar Power in Colombia: Paving the Way for Sustainable Energy Transition
From October 16th to 18th, Qn-SOLAR proudly participated in ExpoSolar Colombia 2024, held at the Medellín Mayor Plaza. This premier event showcased industry pioneers, innovators, and enthusiasts eager to explore sustainable energy solutions for Latin America. Our Booth attracted significant interest, reflecting our commitment to supporting Colombia's ambitious energy transition and net-zero goals.
Colombia’s Renewable Energy Landscape
With its ideal location near the equator, Colombia enjoys abundant sunlight year-round, making it perfect for solar energy expansion. As the third-largest country in Latin America and one of the largest economies, Colombia's energy consumption is expected to rise significantly over the next two decades.
In the context of the National Energy Plan 2020-2050, launched in 2016, Colombia started a journey to diversify its energy resources and ensure a reliable energy supply by promoting wind, solar and geothermal in the country’s electricity mix.
In 2023, Colombia’s energy transition policy is at another crucial turning point, as the government targets the gradual shift to net zero, shifting away from an extractive industry model heavily dependent on oil and coal exports towards a more diversified clean energy economy based on investments in renewable energy sources, critical minerals and hydrogen.
Challenges Ahead: Navigating Energy Shortages and Climate Impacts
At COP26, Colombia announced a net-zero target and an ambitious Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) aimed at a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This commitment is backed by the E2050 Strategy, the Energy Transition Law, and the Climate Action Law.
As we can see, Colombia has emerged as a leader in clean energy transition policy making and is an inspiring example of a fossil fuel producing country committed to climate action, based on a long-term decarbonisation pathway and a policy of energy and economic diversification and a just transition.
The El Ni?o phenomenon has severely affected Colombia, causing hydroelectric power generation to drop to just 10% of normal levels this year, leading to significant electricity supply shortages. With an expected 10% annual reduction in power generation, the pressure on the economy is immense. Facing this challenge, photovoltaic solutions have absolutely become one of a crucial option for ensuring stable electricity supply.
