Restaurant professionals are increasingly attracted to second-hand equipment with warranties. This provides a cost-effective solution while also promoting environmental sustainability.
What happens to old professional kitchen equipment? Millions of tons of restaurant equipment are discarded annually worldwide. However, it is estimated that at least half of these items could be refurbished, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emission reductions and the creation of job opportunities.
Recognizing this potential, start-ups dedicated to the refurbishment of professional kitchen equipment emerged. Their goal is to extend the lifespan of these items and contribute to the circular economy. By acquiring equipment from various sources, such as restaurants, chains, and institutions during renovations or business transfers, they ensure that only well-maintained equipment from reputable brands, less than twenty years old, is considered for refurbishment.
The equipment goes through a diagnostic process and is then either refurbished both technically and aesthetically or dismantled. It is subsequently made available for resale through online platforms or kitchen suppliers. The range of refurbished equipment includes refrigeration, cooking, dish-washing, and bakery equipment, among others.

One of the key advantages of opting for refurbished equipment is the significant cost savings it offers. The refurbished items are priced at a discount ranging from 30% to 70% compared to new equipment, depending on their age. Additionally, the warranty provided, typically at least six months, and after-sales service instill confidence in the buyers.
Not only fast-food chains but also fine dining establishments are embracing the use of refurbished equipment. For example, some restaurants choose to equip their laboratories with refurbished refrigerated storage and other necessary equipment, while opting for new and customized cooking equipment. This mix of new and refurbished items allows for greater flexibility and cost savings based on individual requirements.
The adoption of refurbished equipment represents a shift in mindset and an acknowledgment of the economic and ecological benefits it brings. By choosing to invest in refurbished equipment, restaurant professionals can contribute to sustainability efforts while realizing significant savings in their operational costs.
