The Rise of the Polywork Career

The term “Polywork careers” (where workers opt to hold multiple part-time jobs instead of a full-time job) is starting to gain traction as talented workers increasingly realize that a traditional 9-5 is not the best way to drive income, satisfaction and career fulfillment. The persistence of the Great Realization suggests that traditional work is weakening in favor of flexible work, which may allow an avenue for polywork (also known as a fluid talent model ) to thrive.
The shift to polywork careers could substantially affect the dynamic of organizations. We've already discussed at length how the 'new normal' for savvy enterprises is an optimized workforce, a strategic mid of FTE, IC, and even offshore labor .
Now, it's time for organizations to change not just WHO makes up their workforce, but HOW they get work done, namely, a shift from skills-based organization to project-based labor. Optimized organizations should take page from the agile technology firm playbook, thinking of how to strategically move through multiple projects with the right resources and skills at the right time, vs. the historic formation of organizational charts and job titles. This new working structure presents a challenge and an opportunity for great business leaders who can adapt to the new normal.
This is part of strategic supply chain planning , which helps organizations find the right person with the right qualifications for their supply of projects. Independent workers thrive in this environment, which creates the need for a more blended workforce. As the world changes its paradigm, any organization that cannot quickly adapt will be left behind.?

2 年Totally agree that the future of work is shifting to 'polywork' careers as the desire for the workforce is to move towards breadth vs. depth. They see the importance of risk mitigation of their income via multiple streams but there is also this desire to reflect all of their talents of which this is a way to do so. I see organizations needing to create more of agency like structure where there is a mix of full-time, part-time, consultant, contractor, etc. Inevitably you have a mix of talent because speed to market is imperative and that impacts a company's ability to deliver results.

2 年Well, it's good to see you recognizing this. I hope you do share this insight with your MBO enterprise partners. That way, contractors like me don't feel concerned we might get passed over by them because we have multiple enterprise types, since having one doesn't always provide the best revenue outcomes for us.
