The Rise of Outbound Travel for Indian Travelers - How Visa Reforms and Stability Are Driving Growth

India’s outbound tourism landscape has transformed significantly over the past decade, with more Indians travelling abroad than ever before. The ease of acquiring visas, expanding visa-on-arrival options, and stronger diplomatic ties have been pivotal in driving this trend. Compared to the pre-2014 period, when visa restrictions were tighter, and travel choices were limited, the scenario today is vastly improved. For Indian travellers, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa have become prime destinations due to cost parity, simplified visa processes, and favourable currency stability.

The Impact of Visa Reforms

Over the years, the Indian passport has gained strength, reflected in its ranking on the Henley Passport Index, climbing to the 80th position in 2024 from 88th in 2015. With a rise in bilateral agreements and eVisa provisions, Indian travellers now have easier access to a range of destinations: (A total of 119 Countries where Indians are Preferred & Travel is easy)

Visa-Free Travel: 30 countries now offer full visa-free access to Indians, including popular destinations like Sri Lanka, Jamaica, and Mauritius.

Visa-on-Arrival (VOA): 32 countries, such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, offer VOA, making spontaneous travel more convenient.

eVisa Options: An additional 58 countries, including Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Kenya, have introduced eVisas, streamlining the process further.

This positive shift is due to improved diplomatic relations and strategic alliances, allowing Indians to travel more freely and affordably. For instance, Thailand’s introduction of visa-free travel for 60 days and the multiple-entry Schengen visa for Indians are game changers, simplifying travel logistics.

Travel Costs and Currency Stability

Travelling to certain international destinations now costs almost the same as travelling within India. Destinations in Asia and the Middle East often offer better value for money due to competitive airfares, favourable exchange rates, and flexible accommodation options. Additionally, the Indian rupee’s relative stability against major currencies like the US Dollar and the Euro has made outbound travel more appealing for middle-class families and high-net-worth individuals.

Pre-2014 vs. Current Visa Scenarios

Pre-2014, Indian travellers had access to fewer destinations without extensive visa processing. However, in recent years, the introduction of multi-entry visas, longer durations, and faster processing times have greatly reduced the hurdles for outbound tourism. For example, in 2014, India’s passport ranked lower on global indexes, with fewer visa-free or VOA options, compared to 62 countries today.

The ease of travel has fuelled a surge in Indian tourists exploring new destinations across Asia and Africa, leading to a projected 35 million outbound departures by 2030. In particular, luxury and adventure travel are on the rise as more HNWIs seek unique, personalized experiences. Countries like Mauritius, Seychelles, and even Vietnam have seen increased footfall from India due to relaxed visa policies and competitive travel packages.

?1. Visa Reforms Have Boosted Travel: Over 60 countries now provide visa-free or VOA options, compared to just a handful a decade ago.

2. Cost Parity and Exchange Rate Stability: Favourable travel costs and rupee stability have made overseas travel an attractive option.

3. Growth Projections: The Indian outbound travel market is set to expand rapidly, driven by easier access, economic growth, and rising disposable incomes.

?With a stronger passport, easier visa processes, and strategic alliances, India’s outbound travel market is booming, and destinations worldwide are now more accessible than ever before. Whether for leisure, business, or adventure, the landscape for Indian travellers has never been more promising.
