The Rise of Immersive Theatre

The Rise of Immersive Theatre

As we continue to stay on the cutting edge of live entertainment, we know that it is important to consider a range of experience types. Our industry has seen incredible immersive experiences taking off on land and at sea, but recently at RWS Global, we have been especially blown away and inspired by the rise of immersive theatre in New York City and London.

?

Below are examples of recent shows that have embraced immersive components to transport the audience into the worlds and stories:

?

1.???? The Great Gatsby at The Park Central Hotel, NYC

“A 2023 hot summer night in NYC was immediately forgotten upon entering Jay Gatsby’s mansion. With several rooms including a fabulous bar, Gatsby’s library, bedroom and other locations famous to the tale, the performers invite you into an experience that is so spontaneous and alluring that you have no choice but to be completely immersed in the world they built.”

?

2.???? Medea at Soho Place, London

“The show’s Greek Chorus was cleverly embedded amongst the audience in plain clothes. With Medea constantly addressing her chorus in amongst the audience, each patron was made to feel like a character in this tragic story–going on the journey with the title character, magnificently played by Sophie Okonedo.”

?

3.???? Newsies at Troubadour Wembley Park, London

“Director & Choreographer Matt Cole radiantly transports the audience to turn-of-the-century New York City. Through satellite stages, an extended mainstage and a stage wrapping the perimeter of the theatre, the explosive action happens all around and even above you! The cast brilliantly pulls you in to interact and form your own role.”

?

4.???? Guys & Dolls at The Bridge Theatre, London

“Nicholas Hytner’s incredible production unexpectedly brings to life one of the greatest musicals of all time. Through hydraulic platforms, detailed scenery and perfectly calculated staging, the action surrounds the audience for a complete world-building experience”.

?

5.???? Here Lies Love - Broadway Theatre, NYC

“The way Alex Timbers tells the story of former Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos is so incredibly unique and groundbreaking that it is a game changer for traditional Broadway theatre. Audience members can choose how they want to experience the production, seated or on their feet. They can participate and interact as much or little as they’d like.”

?

For years, we have embraced the challenge of breaking the fourth wall and blurring the lines between performers and audience members to create unforgettable experiences. These shows are wonderful examples of how immersive entertainment has broken its way into theatre and pushed the boundaries of traditional theatrical storytelling, providing our creative team with new channels of inspiration for our latest work.
