“ Currently, there are 15 million freelancers in India. As per some reports, the number of freelancers in India will grow to a whopping 20-30 million by 2025.
47% of the global workforce are now freelancers, Freelancing is going to be a $12B industry in 5 years. “
Being an engineer, How would I start my freelancing journey with my skill set?
This is one of the most common questions I used to face these days in my master classes or in my closed community sessions.
BECAUSE MY NICHE ALSO INCLUDES FREELANCE MENTORING ALONG WITH CAREER COACHING.
They say that one of their colleague or friend or relatives left their 9 to 5 and started freelancing, business or entrepreneurship.?
Even I left my high-paying corporate job when my career was at its peak and started my entrepreneurial journey.??
Many engineers and technical professionals are leaving their regular 9-5!
Yes, It's happening not only in engineering industries, it has become standard across all industries now.
Freelancing becoming an increasingly viable career path. The rise of the gig economy has created new opportunities and challenges for mid-career engineers.
If the industries don't adapt to what their people want, engineers will be left with their options in hand.
What does that mean?
Yes, the market is changing, and it's changing so fast.?
Professionals are looking for multiple paths of income.
Most engineers are highly driven and hungry and want to build on the side of their 9-5, at least to have a minimum one side hustle.?
?Some are really looking to come out of their 9 - 5 and want to completely start a new venture of them.
However, we'll explore in this blog whether freelancing is a fetch or a threat to engineers and how embracing independence can be a game-changer.
The Fetching Perspective:
Freelancing gives engineers a great opportunity to expand their range of skills. Instead of just doing one type of work, they can do many different kinds of projects.
For example, an engineer who used to work only on computer software can now also work on designing physical products. This helps them learn new things and become more adaptable.
Imagine an engineer who is passionate about renewable energy. They can choose projects related to solar panels, wind turbines, or other green technologies. This way, they get to work on what they're genuinely excited about, which makes their career more enjoyable.
?They have the freedom to set their own prices and work hours. This control over their work-life can make them feel stronger and more in charge of their own destiny.?
For example, if an engineer knows they work best in the evenings, they can schedule their projects during that time.
Freelancing lets engineers learn new things, follow their passions, and have more control over their work. It's like having a menu of exciting projects to choose from, and engineers can decide how they want to create their own career path.
The Threat Perspective:
Yet, freelancing comes with its own set of difficulties. Engineers who choose to freelance might experience some challenges along the way.?
These challenges include not having a steady and reliable income, missing out on perks and advantages that traditional employees often receive, and needing to handle the business side of things on their own.
Let's look at some examples.

For mid-career engineers considering freelancing,
How engineers can overcome these Challenges of freelancing :
To tackle the difficulties that come with freelancing, there are a few smart steps you can take. Let's break them down:
Build an Emergency Fund:
One of the tricky things about freelancing is that your income can go up and down. To be ready for the times when there's less money coming in, it's a good idea to create an emergency fund. This is like a savings account that you only use when things get tough. Having this fund can help you pay your bills even when work slows down.
Check Out Health Insurance and Retirement Planning:
When you work for a company, they often provide things like health insurance to keep you healthy and retirement plans to help you save for when you're older and not working. As a freelancer, you have to sort these things out on your own. Look into health insurance plans that suit your needs, and consider setting up a retirement plan, too. It's like planning for your future self.
Connect with Others :?
Freelancing might mean working alone a lot, which can sometimes make you feel a bit lonely. To avoid this, you can join online groups or communities where other freelancers hang out. This is like having a virtual water cooler to chat with others, share ideas, and get some social interaction even if you're working from your own space.
Balancing Independence and Stability:
Freelancing offers autonomy, but stability shouldn't be overlooked. A mix of short-term projects and long-term contracts can provide a balance between independence and financial security. Continuously assess your career goals and make adjustments as needed.
Embracing a Mindset of Growth:?
The key to success in freelancing or any career is a Growth Mindset. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, seek feedback from clients, and continuously improve your skills. This attitude will not only drive your personal development but also attract more clients and exciting projects.
In this ever-changing engineering career, you need to consider the following aspects:
>>> The path to success is not linear. The rise of freelancing presents commendations and threats, but the power to shape your destiny remains in your hands.
>>> Embrace independence with thoughtful planning, continuous learning, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone.
?>>> Whether you choose freelancing, consulting, or another avenue, remember that your skills are valuable. Your experience is a treasure trove of knowledge that can impact industries and drive innovation.
??>>>? Embracing independence doesn't mean you're alone – it means you're part of a growing community of professionals taking charge of their destinies.
>>> Stay curious, stay adaptable, and most importantly, stay confident in your ability to navigate this ever-changing world.
Your engineering background equips you with problem-solving skills that extend beyond technical challenges. Embrace your potential, and the world of possibilities will unfold before you.
