THE RISE OF THE DATA LAKEHOUSE

By W H Inmon

Data architecture is like a moving river. It is constantly changing. First there were applications. Then master files. Then data bases. Then online high performance data bases. Then the data warehouse. Then data marts.

But over time, the complexion and diversity of data has changed. Once there were only punch cards and magnetic tape. Today there is a panoply of data in every form – on spreadsheets, on voice recordings, on data bases, on the Internet and so forth. With the explosion in the types and sources and volumes of data, the whole subject of data architecture has changed.

In a word, data architecture has evolved and is continuing to evolve.

In today’s data architecture there is the data lakehouse. ?The data lakehouse represents the evolution of data architecture in its current state. The data lakehouse has evolved from its early ancestors. ?Today the data architect has to account for transaction based, structured data, textual data and machine based data. All of these types of data make up the data found in the data lakehouse. Each of these types of data are very different – in terms of content, structure, volume and so forth. Each of these different types of data requires its own unique treatment. And all three types of data combine to form the data lakehouse.

The data lakehouse provides a solid foundation for analytical processing that propels the organization into the future.

A book has been published that describes the high level architecture of the data lakehouse. The book is named THE RISE OF THE DATA LAKEHOUSE, Technics Publications. The book is available for free, courtesy of DataBricks. The book describes the different kinds of data found in the data lakehouse, how they are formed, and how they can be used for analytical processing.

Don’t get left behind trying to struggle with yesterday’s data architecture.

Thank you Bill for the book. Do you plan to have a physical copy also in the market? I have downloaded the ebook and have started going through it, but I am a little old school when it comes to reading books and would love to get my hands on a printed version (Preferably hardbound).
