You find what you are capable of when you are forced to either truly live, or lose yourself, because of what happened. - Sara?
We all experience setbacks, traumas, and challenges in life.
We have. We are. We will.
I’ve lived through some of life's most difficult traumas. The ones people seldom talk about, but so many are going through. Betrayals, loss, divorce, pain, hardship. You can read about my journey here: Walk Through This: Harness the Healing Power of Nature and Travel the Road to Forgiveness.
As a matter of fact, on my last vacation, I met a woman on an excursion. We became friends and exchanged information. She found me on Instagram and read about my past. The next day, we happened to cross paths again. She quickly approached me, asked for a moment of my time, and said, “Oh my God. I went through the same as you, but have only been able to tell three people. I’ve never met anyone who has been through what I have. Thank you for speaking up. I am not alone.”
Isn’t it interesting that we hung out together for an entire day, getting to know each other, but didn’t realize that we both went through very much the same thing? Our roots, and our past, are connected to one another.
You never know what the person next to you is going through, or has gone through. We have lost much of this in our world. The ability to sit with a human and see them as just that: HUMAN.
From the outside, you don’t see my battle scars. From the inside, and with those closest to me, you do. They will never leave, and that’s ok with me. Though I have healed, and continue to find what I am capable of, my battle scars are reminders of how far that I have come.
When I think of my life’s journey, I think of the Japanese art of kintsugi. As legend holds, a Japanese shogun wanted his broken Chinese tea bowl repaired, so he sent it to China to be fixed. He didn’t care for the metal stitches used to piece it back together. So he asked local craftsmen to mend it. The result was a stunning new piece that emerged from the fragments, with golden seams tracing the places where the bowl had cracked.
You see, “One can consider how we might live a kintsugi life, or 'rebirth' finding value in the cracks, missing pieces and chips – bringing to light the scars that have come from life experiences, finding new purpose through aging and loss, seeing the beauty of imperfection and loving ourselves, family and friends despite flaws."
I also believe that in the spirit of kintsugi lies forgiveness, which is a practice of self-love. Accepting and honoring all of your breaks, cracks, and imperfections in life, and loving yourself for simply being you. Honor your mistakes and failures, learn from them, do better next time, and forgive.
To me, this is resilience. It’s the power to not only get back up again but to get back up as a new version of yourself. One you love. One you embrace. And one that is stronger than before. With delicate, yet strong golden threads to honor what you have walked through.
It is through our breakdowns that we have our greatest breakthroughs.

1 年Fully agree with you text - and to be honest: your picture (lots of makeup and styling) irritates me. Talking about showing up, trauma, wounds and honest sharing while "hiding yourself behind a masked face"...how does that match for you?

1 年Hello again Sara. This brought a story that sadly more and more people are living. We are a community bonded by seeing and caring for a parent suffering dementia. I canceled two days before attending a conference because my father started acting up and I had to drive 5hrs to his Memory Care home. The hotel manager was politely explaining they had to charge for one night until I mentioned why I canceled. “Say no more brother, I went through that with my father. We won’t charge you anything. God bless you and your father.” I thought, wow! He knows. Can’t describe the emotion of meeting people that share the tragedy of dementia of their loved ones.
