The Rise of AI and the Ethical Challenges It Poses ??

Artificial Intelligence is an essential component across a range of industries. Whether involved in manufacturing, healthcare, or finance, AI has the power to institute game-changing efficiency measures. However, recent worries about AI’s abilities to do more harm than good will force businesses to analyze the subject across all of their initiatives.?

What is AI Ethics and Why Does It Matter?

Although there is a multitude of definitions, AI ethics can be defined as the considerations given to security, safety, humans, and the environment in the context of AI. Whether it revolves around biases in AI, privacy regulation, or mistakes from poorly built AI, ethics is an important element of our future business world.

Especially today, following proper AI ethics is not only responsible but required for good business. Issues within AI ethics can instigate brand damage, legal controversy, and product collapse. Businesses must also be aware of AI regulations at the city, state, and country levels. Without literacy in AI, businesses can expect harsh repercussions.???

How Ethics are Viewed in the Business World

Like operations and finance, ethics have become a crucial business function. Not only do businesses with strong ethical cultures advocate for integrity among their employees, but they gain the trust of their consumers and stakeholders. It is an essential skill that many businesses are pouring money into to reap long-term benefits.?

With the rise of digital technology, it is easier to publicize ethical dilemmas. Thus, businesses must create an environment that inspires positive ethical decision-making. If employees believe their company demonstrates the importance of business ethics, they are likely to apply ethical reasoning on a daily basis. However, businesses must be careful when looking to implement ethical changes that simply realize an economic benefit.

Bias in AI

Although AI might seem like a perfect system, poorly built AI can exhibit bias against insufficient sets of data. Especially for untrained AI, bias towards underrepresented groups and minorities can occur. Some such mega companies have been embarrassed and legally bombarded due to chatbots and hiring tools.

AI Ethics Scandal: Axon Taser Drones

Midway through 2022, an AI ethics board voted in opposition to a taser-equipped drone proposal set by the manufacturer, Axon. The company had prepared a pilot program to be used by law enforcement for over a year - in response to the outbreak of school shootings. Axon thought this would be the best way to combat these horrific circumstances, however, most of the board determined the risks outweighed the benefits. One member even said, “It boggles the mind,” as students have the potential to hack a drone-operated taser (Lapowsky, 2022). Looking ahead, weighing the pros and cons of AI implementation will be a strong subject for any business to tackle.
