Do you know how many people put their hand up.... 2.

Just 2 people had been given some form of professional Leadership training, development or coaching. That is 1.82% of the room!

So what about the other 108, where did they get their Leadership skills from?

When I asked them, the answers generally were around "I learnt from my Leaders when I was younger" "I did what they did and worked the rest out as I went along"

Can you see where those frustrating Leadership decisions that I spoke about earlier come from? It is not because they are crap Leaders, it is not because they are not doing the best they can with what they have at the time... it is because they have not been given any formal training.

Yet, I am sure you make sure that they have all the formal training, certificates etc to do the job they're employed to do. However, when they are put in front of your most valuable resource, your people, and told to Lead them.... it falls in to the "she'll be right bucket" or as one person shared with me... "I did what they did and worked the rest out as I went along"

It is complete and utter madness to have your most valuable resource being Lead and managed by an untrained person... you wouldn't ask an unqualified person to jump in the forklift and unload $1000's worth of equipment of the back of truck would you?

Yet, when it comes to your leadership team, you may find yourself at a loss, grappling with the daunting task of bridging the gap between where you are and where you aspire to be.

Then when you look at the reason why businesses do not train their people in Leadership skills, the most common answer is that it is too expensive, and they cannot afford it.

Then they have to deal with the ripple effects of poor Leadership, which include, high turnover, HR issues, poor work ethic, KPI and deadlines being missed, client complaints.... the list goes on and on and on. Yet they can afford all that these things cost, but can't afford Leadership training.
