The Ripple Effect: How One Video Led to Real Change.
Sometimes, the most powerful movements start with a single voice, a single story, a single video. Today, we're celebrating a victory that proves just that! Our team received an email from Sharon Hirt , Director of Communication Access at Advocates , that warmed our hearts and reinforced why we do what we do. This story is a testament to the power of shared experiences and the importance of amplifying marginalized voices.
Sharon reached out with incredible news. She shared our video, “Introduction to #TheDDBHHTax Campaign,†within her organization and inspired change that will benefit hearing aid users.?
Sharon said that the stories of high medical costs for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals resonated powerfully, prompting the agency's Human Resources team to take action.?
And they did!
Effective April 1st, Advocates, Inc.’s health plan will now provide 70% coverage, with no deductible, for hearing aids, up to $3,500 per ear every three years for both adults and children. This is a monumental shift from the previous policy, which limited coverage to dependent children under 21 at a lower covered cost.

This victory isn't just about numbers or policy changes. This is about recognizing the humanity of individuals who have been burdened by systemic inequalities. The core learning validates these all too common experiences and ensures all individuals have access to the tools they need to thrive.
Sharon's email reminded us that the impact of our work extends far beyond workshops, views, and likes. The awareness we work hard to spread successfully reaches into the lives of real people, making tangible differences. It's a powerful reminder that our voices, when united, can create meaningful change.
#TheDDBHHTax campaign aims to shed light on hidden burdens Deaf, DeafBlind and hard of hearing individuals encounter on a daily basis. We created this campaign to educate, to advocate, and inspire action. And thanks to the responsiveness of the Advocates, Inc.’s HR team - actionable change was made!?
This story is a beacon of hope. It demonstrates that even in the face of resistance, progress is possible. It underscores the importance of sharing our stories, of listening to those who are often unheard, and having the courage to speak up and build a world where opportunity is not limited to your race, gender, sexual orientation, or even - disability.
