RIP Private George Beadsmore
One hundred years ago today, my great uncle Private George Beadsmore died, during the 3rd day of the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave.
Not only a tremendous of honour but also great sorrow are attached to this.
George was just 21, and his father (my great grandfather, also George), had already died young by this time. His mother Mary Grace, a lady of Irish extraction, was already having to bring up quite a number of children (including Private Beadsmore's sister Lily, my grandmother) by herself, so clearly this was not the first significant tragedy in the life of Mary and her fatherless children. It really doesn't bear thinking about.
There are many relatives of Private George Beadsmore out there - some among my Facebook and Linkedin friends - and I am sure they will join in me in raising a hypothetical toast to his memory.
And we must keep in mind that we simply must do anything it takes to avoid terrible war ever happening again, if not all around the world then at least in Europe.
RIP George....
