Famous wrestler John Cena has retired at 47, stating that his 20-year struggle ‘to be seen’ by others was inspired by those working in the charity sector and beyond.
“Just because your charity sometimes feels unseen to the outside world doesn’t mean it is. I want fundraisers to feel that, more than anything,” he shared.
Cena’s experience resonates deeply with many in the fundraising world who often feel their tireless efforts go unnoticed. “When I first became invisible, I was screaming out for help, ‘You can’t see me! You can’t see me!’
But over time, I realised that raising alarm only excited people momentarily. I learned to accept my condition and find joy in building a brand over time” he said.
Despite his invisibility, Cena’s dedication and contributions to ‘being seen’ remained unwavering. This paralleled with the dedication of fundraisers whose efforts, though sometimes unseen, make a significant impact.
In a recent conversation with March One, Cena emphasised that this is a transition in his journey for his work to finally be seen and understood. His story is a powerful reminder that even when our work feels invisible, and even when your parents don’t really know what you do, it can still make a profound difference.
Cena’s journey is a testament to perseverance and the power of unseen efforts – which will resonate with fundraisers, inspiring them to continue their vital work for many years to come
