RIO CLIMATE PANEL 2024

RIO CLIMATE PANEL 2024

On Nov 3 there was an important event in Rio, Brazil with the intent of bringing awareness to general people about the causes and effects of #climatechange and gathering suggestions/ recommendations to be distributed at the upcoming G20 summit, also in Rio, that will be held between November 18 and 19.?There will be 19 member countries + African Union + European Union with the participation of all chiefs of state and their high-level assistants?

This Climate Panel brings memories of the landmark meeting #Rio92, in which everything that was discussed more than 30 years ago about the menaces of #globalwarming did not make the myriad generations of decision-makers put into practice the recommended measures but its effects on the living beings and nature got very much worse.?

I remember vividly the emotion and optimism built during that meeting that things would be corrected and the meeting's iconic phrase was "Think Globally, Act Locally" (and it's still true today)

The fact is that today we are in the midst of a #climateemergency very close to breaching some climate Tipping Points, which if happens will cause a cascading effect. For instance, in the past 13 consecutive months, we had Earth's temperature reaching 1.6 degrees C, above the 2015 Paris Protocol agreement. And there is mounting evidence that once we break Tipping Points there is no way to come back like with the #AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Current) which is fundamental to regulating (balancing) the climate on the Planet

The Rio Climate Panel developed a strategy (which they implemented in other countries before) of using some 50 "postcards" each with a picture and a label on the front, like #seallevelrise, #wildfires, #greenhousegases, etc, and a brief explanation of what that meant on the back.?

Then numerous groups sitting at various tables in a large auditory had the task of finding out and connecting with a pilot pen the cause and effect of all the types of climate events until the final effects on human beings and biodiversity, so it was like a step by step evolution of the climate change

That was a clever manner of not only understanding what climate change events are but also the interconnection among them. Afterward, various proposals were discussed and suggested to be taken to the top leaders who will be gathering in Rio in mid-November.?

And independent of the numerous suggestions, we all have to pressure our decision-makers/leaders because the bottom line, independent of the various means available (wind power, electric vehicles, macroalgae production for carbon sinking, radically reducing plastics, reforestation, use of clean energy, more efficient agribusiness, less food waste etc),...

... is to immediately and boldly take non-bureaucratic actions that avoid a catastrophic outcome that can demise a great part of? our civilization, a potential 6th Great Extinction... and we are running in this direction if we keep postponing taking the fundamental bitter rapid measures in the modes of the Covid Pandemic?

The Rio Climate Panel also focused on refugees, the homeless and landfill trash collectors with the catchphrase "not leave anyone behind"?

We must thank the many organizers (from different countries) and volunteers who made this promising event happen.? The Organizers were the La Fresque du Climat an international NGO and Mawon an association focused on refugees in Brazil
