Why should we carry out regular cyber incident exercises?

A cyber incident exercise is a simulated activity to test an organisation’s readiness and response to cyber threats. It involves creating realistic scenarios and bringing various teams together to practice and refine their actions when dealing with an incident. Regular cyber incident exercising:

1. Enhances preparedness and response: All team members will know their roles in a cyber incident and can respond swiftly and effectively during an actual incident, minimising damage and downtime.
2. Identifies weaknesses and improves security measures: These exercises uncover vulnerabilities in your current security protocols, allowing you to address weaknesses before they can be exploited.
3. Builds confidence and reduces panic: Conducting regular incident exercises builds confidence among employees, as they become familiar with the procedures and tools needed to handle cyber incidents. This familiarity reduces panic and confusion during real events, ensuring a more organised and controlled response to incidents.
4. Secures stakeholder buy-in: Regularly testing your incident response plan demonstrates a proactive approach to cyber security and helps secure ongoing support from stakeholders who understand the importance of cyber resilience.
