There's really nothing for me on LinkedIn today. The community that may have been initiated on LinkedIn, fueled by "answers" and "groups" is now dead. In favor of recruiting and job hunting and poorly executed marketing campaigns, Microsoft has left LinkedIn to die a slow death. I suppose they are still making money on LinkedIn, but as an avid user (and hey, look, I'm writing a LinkedIn article. Remember when that was a thing?) LinkedIn appears to have lost its soul.
What are you looking for on LinkedIn?
Expertise?
Community?
Conversations?
A Job?
An employee?
As far as I can tell, that's really all that is left of LinkedIn. Massive marketing bots have taken over, roping you and all your connections into drip campaigns and multi-pronged marketing campaigns to sell you... What? A new tech platform? A new strategy book that's certain to improve your career? What are people buying from LinkedIn advertisers?
I know, back in the day, LinkedIn was the tip of the spear for B2B advertising. Want to reach a CTO or CMO, put it on LinkedIn. Today, I'm fairly certain the only people inhabiting the pages on a regular basis are people like me: content creators, and job hunters. That's in. LinkedIn WAS a community site. Now LinkedIn is a job site. Not unlike Indeed or Monster.
Are we missing something here? Do we have online platforms or communities that we can consult with our peers, our friends, our future colleages? Well, it's LinkedIn, but the reach has grown very small and the currency has lost most of its past glory.

LinkedIn used to hold clout. Publishing on LinkedIn used to add authority to your writing, or blogging, or book sales. LinkedIn was a standout site on the web for information, technology breifings, and good webinars to improve your working life. What is LinkedIn today? How do you use LinkedIn? Do you use it? (I suppose if you just read that sentence you are in fact here, but how are you using LinkedIn? What does it give you that you can't get anywhere else?
The Last LinkedIn Function
Rolodex online. Who do I know that knows Kevin Bacon? Do I know anyone at Apple? I'd like to connect with a future employer or a future coworker, where can I go access that information?
Other than that, today, LinkedIn provides very little value outside of the job search and recruiting function. That's fine. It does that job quite well. I've only been apllying to LI jobs, for a month or so, and I'm quite happy with the results as I strive to move 100%-Remote again. And funny, I'm not really worried about publishing this on LinkedIn, because no one at my company is looking for a job on LinkedIn. And if they are, they are looking for a job, so not all that enthusiastic about their current job.
LinkedIn use to be a platform. Today, LinkedIn is a job board and a rolodex. Period.
