Two still life paintings of flowers, said to be the work of Queen Victoria, are to be auctioned in London this week.?The canvases are expected to fetch at least £8,000-£10,000 each, when they go under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers.
Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 until her death in 1901, often depicted home and domestic life in her watercolours and drawings.?
The paintings were among objects sold in 1945 from the British royal family’s summer residence of Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, following the death of the Queen’s youngest daughter Princess Beatrice.?
The paintings come with a letter of provenance from Princess Beatrice’s son, Alexander Mountbatten, the 1st?Marquess of Carisbrooke.?He was Queen Victoria’s last surviving grandson, and identified the paintings as his grandmother’s work.??
The two paintings were bought in the 1945 sale by the seller’s grandfather, who also bought a letterbox previously owned by Queen Victoria.?The letterbox will also be auctioned off this week, and is expected to fetch between £4,000-£6,000.
