Right to Repair Now Mandated in Australia
Did you know on 1st July 2022 new laws were introduced in Australia mandating access to vehicle manufacturer information? ?
This means that from now on, automotive manufacturers are required by law to share security information with approved entities outside of their dealer network.?
This new scheme hopes to promote a fair and level playing field for automotive locksmiths, while also providing the customer with a choice on where to have their vehicle serviced.?
The Australian Government has appointed the Automotive Service and Repair Authority (AASRA) to oversee and administer this scheme. Many automotive locksmiths will already be familiar with the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) in the USA. Please note that AASRA is closely based on the NASTF and will serve a similar purpose.?
Access to vehicle safety and security information is understandably treated somewhat different to something like wiring diagrams. In order to access security information such as immobiliser PIN codes and mechanical key codes automotive locksmiths will now require to be listed on the Vehicle Security Professional (VSP) register. ?
This register was initially scheduled for launch in 2023 but the launch date has likely been brought forward. Further information pertaining to the scheme and access to the registration portal can be accessed via the AASRA website below.?
