Right to Refrigeration: A Global Imperative for a Sustainable Future
In May 2024, our Right to Refrigeration Report emerged as a critical call to action for policymakers, businesses, and individuals alike. Launched by Beko, the report shed light on the environmental challenges and food insecurity caused by inadequate access to refrigeration.
One of the key takeaways from the report was that 526 tons of food are lost annually due to a lack of reliable refrigeration, an amount sufficient to feed 1 billion people. With the global population expected to rise sharply by 2050, the report projected that 4.2 billion domestic refrigerators would be needed to sustainably meet food storage needs. The urgency for action was clear, as current cooling solutions fail to serve many regions, particularly in developing countries, leading to food waste, hunger, and environmental harm. The report not only highlighted the problem but also offered pathways to achieve sustainable cooling for all. It called for urgent collaboration between the public and private sectors, urging investment in sustainable refrigeration technologies while emphasizing the potential of innovative solutions like solar-powered cooling systems and energy-efficient refrigerators to bridge the gap for underserved communities.
As a pioneer in sustainable living solutions, we reiterated our commitment to addressing these global challenges. By supporting sustainable cooling technologies and raising awareness through initiatives like the Right to Refrigeration Report, we are helping drive forward a vision of sustainable living for all.
