The Right Questions to Ask

At this time of year, many of us are thinking ahead to spring and to finding a suitable club to play soccer in the coming months. However, finding the right club is not always easy, and knowing what to look for—before sending in a deposit or ordering a uniform—can be confusing.
Luckily, the team of sports psychologists at Warech Associates has identified a set of factors that characterize well-run clubs. Regardless of size, level, or geography, their research found the best clubs share common features that make them terrific places to play. In short, they maximize the skills and talents of their players; create a positive environment that involves parents/families; invest in the development of their coaches; and run a solid business.
Based on data using the firm’s YSCindex? (Youth Sports Club Index) survey, Warech Associates recommends asking the following questions when looking for a great soccer club:
1. What is the overall philosophy or focus of the club? Knowing the primary focus of teams, whether it is to play for fun in low-key local tournaments, compete in prestigious national tournaments, or develop college bound players, will provide insight into the mix of competitiveness, skill development and social interaction offered. Try to find a club that realistically matches the skills and interests of your child.
2. Can you tell me about the club administration and staff? Listen for evidence of a professionally run organization, including experienced leaders and stable staff. Youth sports is big business, with new teams and clubs forming all the time. Be sure the club has a solid business plan, documented policies/procedures, and the basics (such as insurance and certifications) to protect your child and family.
3. What is included in the fees? The best clubs are transparent and open about costs, ensuring that families understand what is and what is not included in their fees. Beyond knowing if there will be extra costs for training, referees, or out-of-town tournaments, take note of signs that the club spends its money on the kids. Things like balls, pinnies, cones, goals, well-maintained facilities and fields, and video equipment for game analysis, show your money is being well spent.
4. How does the club develop its players? Ask about the amount of training hours and frequency of matches. Depending on your needs, look for a club that offers year-round programming, futsal leagues or fitness training. Additional programs such as community service projects or college recruitment guidance reflect a club that takes a holistic approach to supporting your child.
5. If you had to describe the club’s coaching philosophy in three words, what would they be? The answer to this question provides insight into the club’s expectations for behavior and measures of success. Ask for additional information on the credentials and experience of the coaching staff, regardless if they are salaried employees or volunteers. Coaches can have a tremendous impact on your child. Be sure it’s the type of influence that will enhance their confidence, self-esteem, and love of the game.
6. Tell me about the families involved in the club. The best clubs tend to have long-tenured players and families who come back year-after-year. The sidelines should be a friendly, positive place for parents and supporters, with new members welcomed. Steer clear of any club that cannot tell you about its members—or describes lots of movement, with changing rosters, staff, and families.
Having the answers to these questions will help you determine if a club is right for you. Ultimately, the best club is one that provides a positive, fun, educational, and challenging experience that the whole family can feel good about.
