On the Right Path: An Important Milestone in BCLC’s Player-Health Journey
In December 2020, BCLC received the World Lottery Association’s (WLA) Level 4 Certification for excellence in responsible gambling for the fourth consecutive time. Achieving the highest level of certification is a demonstration of our commitment to continuously improve our player-health programs.
BCLC’s GameSense and Voluntary Self-Exclusion programs were highlighted by the WLA’s Independent Assessment Panel as “meeting the highest standards in the field.” While we celebrate this achievement, we also know that maintaining the status quo isn’t good enough, and we’re always looking at new ways to offer more support to our players.
In May, we enhanced access to GameSense Advisors, making them available by phone and online for the first time on PlayNow.com. Other new initiatives to support player health include offering more account-specific dashboards on PlayNow.com: Currently, once players log in, they are able to see their online play activity, including the amount of time and number of days played, deposit and withdrawal amounts. The dashboards are in addition to budget and time limit setting tools that are in place on PlayNow.com to support healthy play.
Working towards our ambition to have the healthiest players in the world, and our goal that no one is harmed from gambling offered by BCLC, we continuously reassess the effectiveness of our programs. Through research, we examine how to better reach players who display signs of problem gambling, and how to reduce further stigma and barriers associated with individuals who would like to or already receive help for gambling-related concerns.
Our overarching goals are to offer safer products and environments, encourage healthy play, and offer support to players when needed. While we know there is more work to do, earning Level 4 WLA certification tells us we’re on the right path.
