Southern Company's rich history with golf

Southern Company has deep ties to the TOUR Championship and East Lake Golf Club. For example, Henry Atkinson, the founder of Georgia Power, helped establish East Lake Golf Club by donating some of the land for the course. Also, legendary golfer Bobby Jones is the longest serving director in the history of the Southern Company board of directors, having been on the board for nearly three decades. We have served as the Official Energy Company of the PGA TOUR and TOUR Championship since 1999. In 2016, we joined Coca-Cola as a Proud Partner of the TOUR Championship.

Our partnership with PGA TOUR aligns with Our Values and company brand. It allows us to celebrate Atlanta, help fuel its economic growth and underscore our mission to be a citizen wherever we serve. Through TOUR Championship, we get to connect with our local community and support several local charities including the East Lake Foundation, Drew Charter School and the greater East Lake community, The First Tee? of Atlanta, Grove Park Foundation and Purpose Built Schools Atlanta. TOUR Championship has donated more than $26 million to the East Lake Foundation and the First Tee? of Atlanta.

Once again, this year we have the privilege of presenting the 19th annual Payne Stewart Award. Presented in conjunction with the PGA TOUR and the TOUR Championship, Southern Company has sponsored the award since its inception. Awarded annually to the professional golfer who best exemplifies Payne’s steadfast values of character, charity and sportsmanship, this year’s recipient is the very deserving Bernhard Langer. His professionalism and distinguished conduct on and off the course – combined with his work with the Bernhard Langer Foundation to help those who are less fortunate feel loved, respected and cared for – exemplifies what we call being “bigger than our bottom line.”
