The Right Paradigm

The Right Paradigm

"Great vision without great people is irrelevant."

- Jim Collins

The old paradigm of career advancement in business, government, and institutions was that you rose in the ranks until you reached your highest level of incompetence. That outdated model is a lose-lose for both the organization and its team members.

A superior model is to identify the "zone of genius" of each team member. Their zone of genius is where they perform at their best, and time stands still for them while they're there. Our zone of genius is where we all bring the most value.

It's the antithesis of setting a good employee up for failure. All too many employees have multiple task responsibilities, some of which they do well and others they don't. I find that the more you extend the bandwidth of a team member's job functions, the more likely you take them out of their "zone of genius" and set them up for failure.?

Without hesitation, I recommend Jim Collins' book, Good to Great , when asked what the best book on leadership is. Here's the essence of Jim's wisdom.

"First Who, Then What—get the right people on the bus. Those who build great organizations ensure they have the right people on the bus and the right people in the key seats before they figure out where to drive the bus.?

They always think first about who and then about what. When facing chaos and uncertainty, and you cannot possibly predict what's coming around the corner, your best "strategy" is to have a busload of people who can adapt to and perform brilliantly no matter what comes next. Great vision without great people is irrelevant."?

The leader's job is to hire the best skills and attitudes for every seat and set each team member up for success.
