Be the Right Coach to help your Clients get Breakthroughs

Be the Right Coach to help your Clients get Breakthroughs

While great coaches can help clients reach their end goals, there are some that can drastically bring them down. There is a fine line between the bad ones and the great ones. The question is, where do you fall?

When you work with a client, they start somewhere and their goal working with you is to get an outcome or get a breakthrough or get a transformation and experience. Usually, between where they are and where they want to go, there’s a gap. As their coach, it’s up to us to build that bridge so they can cross that gap.

Usually, there are three types of coaches or three ways of coaching a lot of people do. Though did you know that there’s a fourth coaching method? If you don’t know what it is, then keep reading because I’ll be discussing that 4th method soon!

Again, there are three types of coaches. Here are the 3 Types:

The “Attaboy!” Coach

The first coach is the “Attaboy!” coach. You’ve most likely met that coach already. Back when I was a kid playing sports, I encountered these coaches during baseball, football, basketball. Attaboy-type coaches are the types that are your cheerleaders.?

The “You-can-do-it!” Coach

The second type of coaches. They are positive thinkers. They’re optimistic. They will keep pushing you to go onwards despite how hard things are. They are kind of similar to the Attaby-coaches in the sense that they are also cheerleaders of sorts.

The “Debbie Downer” Coach

The third type of coach and the one you don’t want to be. They take a negative framework or defeatist approach. You don’t want to do that.

These three coaching styles all work. But there is a fourth type that I’m going to talk about, which I personally think is the best one.

The “Overcomer”

You see where real breakthroughs happen on a surface level as we help our clients overcome their obstacles. You help them overcome obstacles as they go from here to there with whatever it is that you provide, your service, your program, your product. It’s the obstacles.

Now, there are two layers deep of just the surface obstacles that I want to hit on that will make a huge shift in your business overall, no matter what it is that you do.?

Number One: The Beliefs. The great coaches in the world, move away from the surface level of coaching, opportunities to working on opening the door, bridging the gap. Helping people get unstuck around their beliefs.

When’s the last time you had a coach that not only helped you overcome and hit your breakthroughs, made you re-shift your beliefs to anything is possible? That you went from being dependent on a specific program, their product, or service to being independent and free to be yourself? That’s the ultimate freedom, don’t you agree??

Number Two: The Inner Conflicts. This one is a bit tricky since people don’t like talking about this, but you need to address their conflicts. Everyone has their own inner conflicts, even coaches like you and me. These are some very big reasons why clients can’t experience breakthrough.? Though once we address these said conflicts, incredible breakthrough will come to them.?

What I hope that you’ll take from this is that as you work with your client to help them get to where they want to go, that you will bridge the gap. Remember, this isn’t just about your client, it’s about you as well. Once you grow internally, you can work on those beliefs together with your clients and help them get unstuck, get the results they want, and of course, achieve breakthrough with them.?

This is ultimate freedom. It’s all about being able to help people to be able to go out and make a difference, to have an impact, to contribute at a deep level.

Excellent article, Dan Kuschell. I really liked your digging into the difference-making skills of a coach: helping the client shift beliefs and resolve inner conflicts. I think you get to the heart of things there.
