Riding the LED Lighting Roller Coaster

As I prepare to leave the lighting industry I find myself reflecting on the changes during my last 10 years or so. It's been a ride! I came into the industry just as LED technology was taking off and I've seen a huge amount of change in this disruptive and disrupted market.

I can only compare it to riding a roller coaster. And for a marketer that's both exhilarating and challenging. Here's my highly technical schematic...

I'm still not sure where we are on the ride, I'm thinking maybe we're still going round the loop the loop?!? What's really exciting is that the track is still unfinished. The script hasn't been written, no-one has a clear grasp on what's next.

The last decade has seen a massive shift in technology, new global entrants to the market, changes in legislation, new consumer demands and emergence with IoT. Add to this an incredible increase in the speed of change and you can see why I'm comparing it to a roller coaster ride...

The top 3 things our industry needs to have:

  1. An open mind. Expect the unexpected. Change your business model. Look where you haven't looked before.
  2. Agility. Get your ideas working fast. Get ready to change direction. Be ready to jump on any opportunity
  3. A collaborative approach. Trust each other more. Seek out new partners. Be part of the new convergence.

I'm left with a fantastic appreciation for lighting, human response to lighting, urban design and lighting technology. I would love to see lighting take any even more important part in community, architecture and well being. This industry simply doesn't know how important it is. So I would urge the lighting industry to

Get together, get a collective message and get heard!
