The building has two storeys, 16 rooms, 34 windows and 99 doors! The floor tiles for the mansion were imported from Italy, the teak for the main staircase was imported from Burma, the window panes were flown to the island all the way from Scotland and the magnificent bathroom fittings were bought from England. Indeed, this sensational mansion was designed to be a masterpiece of the highest order! To this day the mansion enthrals all those who visit it. There is beauty and class in every corner of this castle which makes it a remarkable attraction to visit in the region.
As Siriwardena and his wife did not have any children, the Richmond Castle was bequeathed to the Public Trustee. It was the will of the famous local philanthropist to convert the majestic mansion to a children’s home.
