Ribcage stretches

Ribcage stretches

I've talked in my various Breathing videos about the importance of a flexible ribcage, and those exercises are a great start - a strong, stretchy diaphragm is a vital foundation for a flexible ribcage.

But stretching the diaphragm doesn't always automatically mobilise the joints and stretch all the small muscles around the ribs - sometimes you have to go in a bit deeper.

I've seen these stretches help patients with issues from neck and shoulder pain, to lower back and pelvic pain, to dodgy knees - the muscle attachments of the ribs really can affect your body all the way down.

This video contains two different stretches for the ribcage - one pulling up, and the other pulling down, to create space between the ribs at the side of the body.

I would suggest testing both stretches, and comparing the left and right sides of your body. You might be surprised at just how asymmetrical you are.
