RIAA Report shows impact of music across the country.

The report underscores the powerful economic impact of music across the U.S., contributing $212 billion to the national GDP (5.7% annually from 2017-2020) and supporting 2.5 million jobs. Beyond its cultural and emotional influence, music drives growth in diverse sectors like live venues, festivals, retail, digital platforms, and education.

Georgia, with its rich cultural history and diverse music scene, is a key player in the industry, contributing $2.8 billion to the state’s GDP. Yet, according to the latest RIAA 50 States of Music report, Georgia lags behind other states in key areas such as music education, festivals, and business output. While other states have made significant strides in nurturing musical talent and supporting industry innovation, Georgia has not fully capitalized on its music sector’s potential.

States like Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas have seen massive economic growth from their music industries, adding billions to their state economies and creating thousands of jobs. Georgia has the talent, history, and music scene to compete, but it must invest more strategically to keep pace.

To truly unlock the potential of Georgia’s music economy, we must prioritize music education, support independent venues, and invest in policies that foster growth. Establishing a statewide music office and committing to proactive industry investments could drive significant economic development, job creation, and cultural enrichment. By acting now, Georgia can position itself as a leader in the national music landscape and ensure that its residents and businesses reap the full benefits of this vibrant, growing sector. The wild thing is, it’s as simple as keeping much of the post-sound design work here in Georgia to support the film industry. Opportunities like soundtracks, music supervision, and music coordination are right within our reach. We have the talent and the skills to make it happen. I definitely plan to do my part when it comes to mindset development and career guidance for independent artists and music entrepreneurs, as well as contributing within the realm of music publishing. But it would be even better if we found ways to keep the music side of film here more intentionally, with increased funding opportunities for companies focused on supporting the economic health of our industry! - Self

This is almost a $1 Billion dollar decline over the last decade. The music industry can be a catalyst for the overall entertainment ecosystem and should be supported.
