RiA Podcast Ep22 - Redefining Africa's Energy Landscape: AFC’s Bold Moves in Renewable Projects with Osaruyi Orobosa
Tony Tiyou
Founder, CEO & Editor-in-Chief @ Renewables in Africa (RiA) | Clean Energy Solutions
In the latest episode of the "Renewables in Action" podcast, I had the pleasure of engaging in an insightful conversation with Osaruyi Orobosa, Senior Vice President of Project Development at the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC). Osaruyi has played a pivotal role in some of the continent's most transformative infrastructure projects, spanning power, heavy industry, transport, and telecom. Our discussion highlighted the significant strides that AFC is making in renewable energy and how these projects are shaping Africa’s energy future.
In this article, we’ll dive into some of the key points from our conversation, showcasing AFC's innovative approaches to expanding renewable energy across Africa and the challenges they navigate along the way.
AFC’s Acquisition of Lekela Power: Becoming a Major Player in Renewable Energy
One of the standout moments in our conversation was Osaruyi’s detailed account of AFC’s acquisition of Lekela Power. This acquisition has positioned AFC as the largest renewable energy player on the African continent, marking a pivotal moment in the organization’s journey toward sustainable development.
Lekela Power, known for its extensive wind energy projects, is a significant addition to AFC’s renewable energy portfolio. According to Osaruyi, the acquisition wasn’t just about expanding AFC’s footprint but was a strategic move to leverage Lekela’s experience in delivering large-scale renewable projects. This acquisition aligns with AFC’s long-term vision of reducing energy poverty in Africa while driving economic growth through sustainable energy solutions.
Osaruyi emphasized that the acquisition has allowed AFC to tap into the vast potential of wind energy in Africa, offering a more diversified approach to renewable energy beyond solar. With a strong presence in markets like South Africa, Senegal, and Egypt, AFC is now better positioned to make a meaningful impact in the continent’s transition to clean energy.
The Strategic Partnership with Infinity Power: Aligning with Long-Term Goals
Another critical element we discussed was AFC’s partnership with Infinity Power, a collaboration that’s been instrumental in accelerating their renewable energy goals. This partnership has allowed AFC to pool resources and expertise, enabling them to scale up their renewable energy projects more rapidly.
Osaruyi explained that this strategic alliance is not just about project execution but about creating a framework for long-term renewable energy growth in Africa. Infinity Power brings a wealth of experience in solar and wind energy, while AFC provides the financial muscle needed to bring large-scale projects to life.
This synergy has enabled the two entities to tackle some of the most pressing challenges in Africa’s energy sector, such as financing, project management, and community engagement. Together, AFC and Infinity Power are working on developing projects that not only meet Africa’s current energy needs but also create a sustainable pathway for future generations.
Morocco-UK Power Project: Reshaping Intercontinental Energy Trade
One of the most ambitious projects that Osaruyi highlighted is the Morocco-UK Power Project, which has the potential to reshape energy trade between Africa and Europe. The project aims to export renewable energy generated in Morocco directly to the UK through an undersea power cable, a distance of over 3,000 kilometers.
Osaruyi noted that this project could serve as a blueprint for intercontinental energy trade, showing how renewable energy can transcend borders and create new economic opportunities. The project is a testament to Africa’s potential to become a major player in the global energy market, providing clean, reliable power to Europe while boosting local economies in Morocco.
However, Osaruyi was candid about the challenges involved, from regulatory hurdles to technological complexities. Yet, he remains optimistic that the Morocco-UK Power Project will pave the way for similar initiatives in the future, opening up new avenues for African countries to export clean energy on a global scale.

Balancing Energy Poverty and Climate Change: AFC’s Approach
A recurring theme throughout our discussion was the delicate balance between addressing energy poverty and combating climate change. Africa faces a unique challenge—millions of people still lack access to reliable electricity, yet there is an urgent need to transition to cleaner energy sources to mitigate climate impacts.
Osaruyi shared that AFC is committed to striking this balance by focusing on rapid energy access through clean energy solutions. Their strategy involves integrating renewable energy projects into regions where the energy deficit is most acute, thereby providing communities with immediate access to electricity while reducing their reliance on fossil fuels.
This approach not only helps to address pressing energy needs but also contributes to global climate goals. By investing in renewable projects that are both scalable and sustainable, AFC aims to create a future where economic development and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
The Impact of the Red Sea Power Wind Farm in Djibouti
One of the projects that best encapsulates AFC’s vision is the Red Sea Power wind farm in Djibouti. Set to boost the country’s energy capacity by 50%, this wind farm is a game-changer for Djibouti’s energy landscape.
Osaruyi discussed the challenges of managing such a project, particularly given its national significance. Large-scale renewable projects like the Red Sea Power wind farm require navigating complex regulatory environments, managing community expectations, and ensuring that the project delivers long-term benefits for the host country.
Despite these challenges, Osaruyi emphasized the transformative potential of the project. Once completed, it will provide clean, renewable power to thousands of households, reduce Djibouti’s dependence on imported fossil fuels, and set a precedent for similar projects across the continent.
A Vision for Africa’s Renewable Energy Future
As our conversation drew to a close, Osaruyi left me with a sense of optimism about Africa’s renewable energy future. AFC is not just building projects; they are building a sustainable energy ecosystem that can drive economic growth, reduce energy poverty, and place Africa at the forefront of the global renewable energy transition.
