RFID based Asset Tracking and Management

I have been talking and working with many clients for their needs of RFID based Asset Tracking, Management and Inventory Control. There are more than hundred types of RFID tags for almost every possible material from paper to glass to steel, to serve any imaginable use-case. And then we have fixed RFID antennas, mobile handheld RFID readers and many other accessories to make system work including software in the mix of all these hardware components.

To my surprise, common misunderstanding is that RFID system is a commodity solution and this misconception leads to less effective RFID system implementation which otherwise could be very powerful and robust to deliver far greater ROI than what is being experienced in the user organizations. It is not new phenomenon, rather it has been out there for years and of course latest technological advancements in all RFID system components and IT have dramatically improved the business operations.

In my opinion, treat RFID system as combination of Communications Systems and Information Systems. Once you understand how various communication sensors and hardware components can give the significant raw data which can be derived to intelligent information with the help of context-algorithms, and can be further assessed and analyzed intelligently through software applications and databases; then it unleashes its true power of IoT (Internet of Things) readiness and brings sky to its limits for business applications. Seed of power lies in the raw data feeds from sensors (such as excited RFID tag) which is part of communication systems and then it blends with IT (Information Technology) systems to deliver Business Intelligence, Spatial Awareness and Analytics which fuels the smooth business operations in almost magical manners.
