Super proud to attend the service of dedication on August 2nd at Portland Port for RFATiderace. A fantastic day - lovely service - and an honour to finally see what Jon's been working on for the last 15 years. He was there from the start, that puts into perspective just how long these incredible projects take. Engineering on an enormously big and complex level, using knowledge, experience, communication and flair to the full - incredible team work, pre-empting and responding to challenges and the inevitable pressures of time.
The Tide-class tanker (formerly the Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) project) is a class of four fast fleet tankers that will enter and serve with the British Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The 37,000 t ships will provide fuel, food, fresh water, ammunition and other supplies to Royal Navy vessels around the world as well as humanitarian crisis work which isn't so well documented.
The sun shone, the ships' company had good things to say of their new vessel and it's hard not to be moved by such a project and an occasion. And there was cake...cut in the time honoured tradition by the sponsor (Lady Anita Lister) and the youngest member of the ships' company. Made on board and quite honestly the best fruit cake ever.
