Rewriting your ABAP code for S/4HANA

17 years ago I did an ABAP course for 4 weeks at Cap Gemini Sloterdijk (The Netherlands). It was during the summer. I was the only student. My teacher had all the time to explain ABAP to me. I had to do exercises. This is the Cap Gemini way of training instead of falling asleep in powerpoint presentations. I was 24 years old.

The teacher started by teaching me how the 3 main parts work. There is the input part, the processsing part and the output part. You begin with table definition. For example LFB1, KNA1. Creation of the internal table. Defining the fields of the internal table. Select statements loading the data from the standard SAP tables into the ITAB (internal table). You can build in some logic using IF statements or CASE statements (multiple IF). Then there is the output part where you either output the reports to dynpro (screens) or print (paper).

Last year I worked on an S/4HANA system and I followed the 6 days of S/4HANA training at SAP Education the Netherlands. The same place I did my SAP training 17 years ago. Den Bosch, The Netherlands. There is now the ACDOCA table. The Universal table. Many of the seperate tables have merged into one big table. The ACDOCA table. At first you don't need to reprogram the old ABAP programs because there are CDS views. Core Data Services views. These are views of the old tables.

If you want to get the real power of the new S/4HANA you need to rewrite your old ABAP programs into new S/4HANA programming. Instead of the selecting from the BSEG table you will now select from the ACDOCA table.

To get the full power of S/4HANA you need to rewrite your old code. It is no use buying a Ferrari and then only driving 100 miles an hour with it.
