Rewriting the future of EU's democracy

This year's European elections continue being just a combination of 27 national elections. With no real European dimension. With little grounds to persuade voters into believing that European Parliament politicians have a truly European democratic mandate. Surprise surprise, voters think of European democracy as something on the spectrum of a naive vision and a populist scam.

Volt Europa wants to change that. Not only with words, but also with specific proposals, programs and actions.

In April, we elected the first ever pan-European candidate list.

It personifies the main mission of Volt movement - to strengthen European democracy so that the EU is more efficient and fairer. And trusted by its citizens that it is so.

It's been an honour to lead the pan-European leadership campaign together with Sophie in 't Veld from Volt Nederland , Clara Panella Gómez from Volt Espa?a , Damian Boeselager from Volt Deutschland , Sven Franck from Volt France and Duarte Costa from Volt Portugal . It's an honour to represent Volt Slovensko on the list together with Maros Halama .

Besides us, we have candidates from 20 different European countries on the list.

(Albania, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom). Yes, even from countries that are not part of the EU yet. Because we believe that one day they will be.

This list (symbolic for now) is the first of its kind and was created according to the already approved proposal of the European Parliament. Symbolic because the EU member states must unanimously approve this legislative proposal in the Council of the European Union . So far they have not done so. Guess why.

We still need to wait for national politicians to walk their walk of being (and voting) European. That is why European Parliament #elections remain a classic national game.

In Volt Europa we continue emphasising the need to change this. Otherwise we will remain stuck in the closed loop of national interests standing in the way of European ambition. The only way that can make our continent stronger, more safe and prosperous. Not as an aggregate of (supposedly mutually exclusive) national interests. As a new layer on top of the national one - a truly European one. Starting with the most important democratic process we have in our hands.

This definitely marks the beginning, and I find it important to take pride in our involvement in this transformative shift in political perspectives. I wholeheartedly echo Lucia's sentiments, as I've encountered numerous friends, colleagues, or strangers from Belgium, Portugal, or during my travels to and in Slovakia—who express their intent to support Volt, and specifically, to endorse me. The prospect of facilitating this across Europe is truly exhilarating. Enabling change... the ability to cast our votes for candidates on a trans-European scale is monumental. Personally, I am committed to voting for Lucia, without hesitation. And it is a pity it is not possible from any European country but this time only from home. We would definitely get more votes for her!

Whether you like it or not, the vast majority of citizens in the Member States of the EU, even in the younger generations, do not think, behave and vote like the handful of internationalized and self centered individuals, out of touch with reality, in the Brussels bubble. People fortunately tend to remain deeply rooted in their country, language and culture. They legitimately want to vote for candidates they know, who speak their language, whose political affiliation they can understand by national standards, and who (horresco referens) are prepared to defend the best interests of their country in the European Parliament. For this reason (but this is nothing personal), I would SO not vote for you in the next elections if I could.
