Rewrite The Story In Your Head To Beat Unemployment Faster

Rewrite The Story In Your Head To Beat Unemployment Faster

Most job seekers drastically undersell themselves, in the way you write resumes and communicate during interviews. Almost every job seeker does this, so you're probably doing it too, even if you think your resumes and interviews are great.

It's the primary reason unemployed job seekers struggle and why job seekers with long gaps or other risks to employers (like age 40, 50, and 60+ job seekers) can't find jobs easily in 2024.

You don't mean to undersell yourself, but it's how you've been taught to write resumes and conduct interviews. It's been reinforced by professional career resources and your friends/ mentors. It's how Certified professional resume writers have been taught/tested) to write resumes ... and the same with most Career Coaches and Outplacement advisors.

So it's the way you think about your own career ... with a story in your head that undersells you.

To beat unemployment and find your next job faster, it's critical that you rewrite that story in your head to more effectively sell yourself to employers:

  1. Stop Describing Yourself As Qualified: Qualified isn't enough in 2024, as employers get so many qualified candidates that being qualified makes you average.
  2. Give The First Impression That You're The Top Candidate: A top candidate gives the first impression in resumes and during interviews that "I have what you need". Your resume and interviews give the first impression that you have many skills, giving a confusing first impression, asking an employer "Do you need any of this stuff?".
  3. Standard Resume Templates Are A Waste Of Your Time: Employer hiring processes screen standard resume templates out, even if you meet all the requirements. Why shouldn't they? A standard resume gives the appearance that you're not really trying for that individual opportunity.
  4. Responsibilities Make You Look Average - Employers Want Impact: When you describe your job responsibilities, your goal is to appear qualified. But employers have choices between many qualified candidates, usually many times more than available interview spots. When employers have so many choices, why would they choose an average candidate, when they could hire an impact player?

Rewriting the story in your head can be challenging, because it requires breaking some bad ingrained habits. But once you've learned how to change your own story, you'll start landing more interviews, advancing in the hiring process, and getting job offers more quickly.
