Reward vs Recognition

A generalisation would be to suggest that we all go to work to earn money and for most of us, that would be true. So to then recognise employees without numeration at the centre would be pointless right?

Wrong!

Salary alone won’t usually be enough of a motivator, at least not for everyone, but spending time with employees and recognising their value will go a long way in ensuring employees feel supported and nurtured in the workplace.

We all spend much of our week at work and fostering positive relationships between employees is essential. There are many ways to do this but focusing on the following areas would give a great basis to start from:

·???????? Pin down weekly, biweekly, or monthly one to ones. Protecting time in an employee’s schedule will demonstrate that they are worthy of your time and effort. This will also give an opportunity to develop a relationship.

·???????? Setting goals for the employee which will allow for both progression and development of skills. This doesn’t need to be rewarded financially but could allow the employee to acquire skills in additional areas to provide added fulfilment within their role.

·???????? The above will also give the opportunity to get to know the employee, this doesn’t need to be on a personal level, but spending time with an employee will give you the chance to understand their needs as an individual. This knowledge will allow you to support them in ensuring you get the best out of them.

Reward is as much about respecting someone’s contribution and valuing the part they play within the business as is it is about money. Recognising an employee and the part they play can be a huge motivator.

?Finally, it really can be as simple as a ‘thank you’ at the end of a day or the week as a manager saying thank you to an employee for the contribution, they have played will make a difference in how they feel and will ultimately impact positively in the long term.

I am one of those employees that gets paid to pay my bills, but whose reward is definitely not financial. I really value the managers and leaders who take the time to understand how I feel rewarded, what motivates me, and together create a relationship and environment that allows both me and the business to flourish and deliver great outcomes.
