Revolutionizing Strength Training: How Magnetic Encoders Improve the Efficiency and Safety of Sparkfield Core
RLS Merilna tehnika d. o. o.
RLS is the world renowned developer and producer of magnetic encoders for a broad range of industries.
Background
Founded in 2021, Sparkfield is revolutionizing strength training with its innovative Sparkfield Core device. By merging robotics with personalized fitness solutions, Sparkfield Core delivers a full-body workout tailored to each user's biomechanics, replacing multiple machines with one compact system. With more than 20 exercises — including the "Big Five": bench press, squat, shoulder press, lat pulldown and deadlift — the machine is suitable for beginners and elite athletes alike.
With advanced training methods such as eccentric overloads, isokinetic and isometric exercises as well as supersets and drop sets, Sparkfield Core provides real-time data to ensure balanced muscle development and reduce the risk of injury. With patents in the US, China and Europe and CE certification in 2023, Sparkfield is committed to delivering efficient strength training solutions with cutting-edge technology.
Challenge
Developing a machine that combines precision, safety and adaptability was a major challenge. Sparkfield Core requires software-controlled resistance that dynamically adapts to each user's strength profile and movement patterns — something that traditional weight-based systems cannot offer. To achieve this, a high degree of precision was required to ensure balanced muscle development and minimize the risk of injury.
In addition, the system had to detect and correct even small imbalances by analyzing the forces on both sides of the body in real time. This level of precision was essential to provide actionable feedback while ensuring a seamless training experience.
Solution
To meet these technical requirements, Sparkfield integrated the AksIM-2 redundant magnetic encoder system. This encoder ensures the precision and reliability of the device by accurately measuring joint angles, enabling real-time adjustments tailored to each user's biomechanics.
The AksIM-2 system consists of two fully independent, electrically isolated encoder modules combined with an axially magnetized ring. This design enables position monitoring via two independent channels with a phase difference of approx. 180°. Sophisticated self-monitoring functions continuously check the internal parameters and provide real-time alerts via communication interfaces and an integrated LED.
The non-contact, low-profile design was essential for integration into the compact Sparkfield Core frame to maintain the device's sleek design while meeting high performance and safety standards.
Results
The integration of the AksIM-2 encoders has significantly improved the capabilities of Sparkfield Core. The device now measures and regulates forces with gram-accurate precision, detecting imbalances and ensuring symmetrical muscle development. These real-time adjustments not only improve training effectiveness, but also reduce the risk of injury.
Ensuring the required accuracy, data rate and suitable interfaces was crucial for optimal performance. The successful integration of the encoders — including the precise mechanical components — contributed to the success of Sparkfield Core.
For Sparkfield, the encoders simplified production with quick calibration and straightforward set-up. The result is a robust, data-driven fitness device that offers unparalleled performance and sets a new industry standard by combining innovation, precision and safety in a compact solution.
Future Goals
After a successful pilot phase, Sparkfield started its first production run, which was delivered to customers in September 2024. Sparkfield Core has proven its potential in micro-studios, physiotherapy clinics and corporate wellness programs — ideal for quality-focused environments with limited space.
Sparkfield continues to innovate to bring personalized, efficient strength training to individuals and organizations worldwide.
